Helping Less Fortunate Dog Owners Just in Time for the Holidays
Rover loves giving back to our community, and so do our sitters! Rover sitter, Amber C., from Seattle, WA is helping less fortunate dog owners this holiday season. We loved hearing from Amber about her inspiration for her project and wanted to share her story with our Rover community! Here’s what she had to say.
Working downtown, I often walk past homeless men and women with their pets. For someone with so little to their name, a pet is their companion, family, source of warmth and their life – they provide unconditional love and happiness.
Many know firsthand that having a dog is expensive, and I’m hoping that our community could do something to ease this expense for those who are less fortunate.
Last year I hosted a pet supplies drive for the Doney Memorial Pet Clinic which offers veterinary care and a pet food bank for low income and homeless residents of the Seattle area. When I arrived to drop off my donation, the cheers, clapping and crying from those waiting was powerful enough to motivate me to do the drive annually.
“In their interviews of 105 homeless adult men and women, Robert M. Kidd and Aline H. Kidd found that homeless pet owners were the most dedicated pet owners they had ever encountered. During their interviews, the Kidds repeatedly heard the same comments: “He’s the only thing that loves me.” “I always feed her first.” One homeless woman candidly stated, “She doesn’t mind that I’m dirty or smell – she loves me anyway.” It was clear that many homeless adults had pets as a benefit to their mental and physical well-being. This is why The Doney Clinic and your donations are so important. Please help us keep their bowls full and our clinic doors open.” – From The Doney Memorial Pet Clinic Website.
