About: My relationship with cats is one of the most meaningful of my life — and it began the moment YinYang chose me. YinYang was my first cat, and he arrived in 2015 during one of the most demanding seasons of my life — the years I was completing my doctoral degree in Ciudad Juárez. I had never had a cat before and I had no idea what was coming. What came was one of the most profound animal bonds I have ever experienced. He was my companion through long study nights, my comfort through difficult days, and my greatest teacher about what cats truly are — not distant or indifferent as people sometimes claim, but deeply present, quietly intuitive and loyal in ways that take your breath away once you see it. YinYang made me adore cats completely. He made me learn everything about them, understand them, marvel at them. He passed during the pandemic and the space he left has never fully closed. Mae came to us as a fragile 3-week-old kitten from the community of cats who live in our backyard — a community my husband Jason and I gladly feed and offer refuge to, because every animal deserves safety and kindness, especially those the world has overlooked. Mae never left. She grew from a tiny baby who needed round-the-clock care into a magnificent, thriving 3-year-old Maine Coon mix who is fully and completely one of our furry family members — cherished, healthy and deeply loved every single day.
