I got my first cat at the age of 15, this is something I waited many years for and my parents saw my dedication of care after many years with smaller animals. I always knew the rescue route would be one I would take, after visiting my local RSPCA we brought Dandy home, a majestic tuxedo male, full of excitement to his new surroundings. When buying my first home at the age of 21, I knew I had the capacity to give another fur baby a home. This is when Cleo caught my eye, a gorgeous calico girl who was looking a little bit worse for wear. This wasn’t without its complications, firstly being that she didn’t respond to her name… we found that ‘Chloe’ worked better for her, so Chloe it was. Due to Chloe’s age and circumstances, we had no idea of her background. With plenty of patience and creating a safe space, she soon settled in and began ruling the roost. Unfortunately Chloe was not in the best of health, resulting in her having extensive dental surgery to remove all her teeth. This required me to learn a lot about cat health, and how best to care and manage this. During this time I also learned how to administer medication to animals, ensuring minimal stress. Later that year one of the vets at the practice suggested my home and experience would be a good fit to a semi-feral black kitten found in a barn, 6 weeks old and weighing only 500g I knew I had to give him a chance. I brought Caesar home, he was the cutest little dot and only the size of my palm. Due to his age, I had to hand rear him, gradually he started to put weight on, and over the year grew into a big healthy handsome 6.5kg miniature panther! Unfortunately it hasn’t been sailing with Caesar had surgery due to a urinary tract blockage, and thankfully recovered from a kidney injury. My experience enabled me to spot the signs quickly, and ensure Caesar got the required care in a timely manner. Following his recovery, I developed a keen interest in cat enrichment.
