Fenced backyard, the house has plenty of space inside for running and playing when weather is bad. Dogs I own are very kind and playful. My home allows me to keep the Pets separate if needed.

This is my first time using Rover, I selected "house sitting". When I initially messaged James, I included in the message that he must be comfortable giving a daily pill to one of our two cats. He said he was comfortable, and I booked him. In preparation for the actual meet & greet, I wrote up a google doc with all our housesitting responsibilities (feeding cats 2x daily + 2x daily pill for 1 cat, cleaning litter boxes and litter off the floors, taking the trash out since our small apartment will smell like cat poo if you don't, keeping blinds open for our plants and turning on plant lights in the morning). When we met for the meet & greet I walked him through everything, and supervised him giving a pill to our cat - he said he was comfortable with everything. Since this was our 1st time having a cat sitter, we also had a security camera in our apartment which I disclosed to him during our meet & greet. He agreed to all of this. During the 1st day of our trip, I noticed that something was blocking the camera. I texted James and later saw on the camera him removing a cloth from on top of the camera - this made me uncomfortable, but there was nothing I could do. His decision to cover the camera was not only a breach of our agreement he had consented to but a violation of our trust. On the 2nd day, I checked the camera midday and saw the blinds down and the plant lights off. I texted James again, he said "I thought I was supposed to turn the lights off when I left"... I'm not sure how he got that idea given there was a checklist in the google doc to turn on the lights and open the blinds in the morning after he fed the cats and cleaned the litter boxes. I asked him to review the document again to make sure everything is getting done, he said he would. This continued to erode trust - if I hadn't seen on the camera that he wasn't following instructions, our plants could have died while we were going for a whole week (multiple hundreds of dollars of lost plants). When my husband got home from his trip to meet with James, the state of our home was appalling. In the checklist google document, I had included in the checklist the exact time my husband would be returning home and to please clean up the apartment before he arrived. Instead, my husband returned home to dirty dishes piled up, a stench of accumulated garbage, a clutter of mountain dew and beer cans, and pizza boxes. The unemptied trash, chewing tobacco left on our bed, and foul odor throughout our home were a testament to his lack of basic hygiene and respect for others. Moreover, James' inconsiderate use of our belongings, like unplugging our plant light to charge his phone and moving one of our computer cables, despite our checklist including to please not touch our electronics. His carelessness in not refilling the cat's water bowl further highlighted his negligence (also in the checklist we provided). Additionally, the cat's pill bottle appeared to have the same number of pills as before we left for our trip. One of our cats suffers from irritable bowel disease and requires medication twice daily - the pill bottle was filled 1/4th with pills before we left, and was the same when my husband returned. My husband confronted James about this and he continued to say he gave our cat his pills despite the bottle having the same number of pills. Confronting James about these issues was met with defensiveness and outright dishonesty. As Rover suggests to reach out to the sitter directly to resolve disputes, when I outlined my issues to James and asked for a refund, he called me a "cheapskate" and "overreacting." He told me he was being asked to do tasks beyond being a "pet sitter" (even though I had selected "house sitting" on the Rover app) by asking him to take out the trash, clean the floors, and open the blinds/turning on our grow light every morning for our plants. He said he was uncomfortable being on camera during his stay as well. I asked him why he agreed to these responsibilities during the meet & greet if he wasn't comfortable, and he said he gets penalized if he cancels a stay once it's been booked. I don't know if this is true, but I would have preferred honest communication about his comfort level so I had an opportunity to help in some way or adjust expectations if needed during the meet & greet. It pains me to write such a scathing review, but I feel obligated to warn others. The level of neglect and disrespect we experienced from James was unacceptable. I would strongly advise against entrusting him with house sitting - even his basic inability to follow a checklist provided is concerning. I hope at least he learns from his experience and pays better attention to detail if he housesits in the future.

James took care of my guy. I have a pandemic dog who hadn’t had a lot of socialization with other dogs. James graciously did the introductions with his dogs and it went well. Luca is a big boy and he was gentle and friendly. Thank you James for making him feel at home and for keeping him safe
