I have about 10 years of experience owning and living with dogs. I have had my current dog for 7 years. She is a rescue with lots of energy and lots of anxiety, so I have tons of patience when dealing with anxious dogs. When I first got my dog she was afraid of basically everything, including men. She was also aggressive towards most other dogs we would encounter. But I've worked with her daily over the years to get to the point where she lets people and dogs come up to greet her. I believe in only POSITIVE reinforcement; I never yell or reprimand dogs. With my own dog, I approach every walk as a training opportunity, so I make sure to reinforce/reward good behaviors and redirect any negative behaviors (e.g., aggression with other dogs/pedestrians). So if your dog is food motivated, I'd be glad to take along training treats (I use puppy treats, 1.5 calories each so my dog doesn't gain weight). I also believe strongly in letting the dog lead the walk (to an extent). I think it is important that dogs be allowed to smell and explore what they want to, so this means I often go "off the beaten path" a lot. I can also run/jog with your dog for parts of the walk. Finally, my dog has strong prey drive, and is very much a scavenger, so I am very experienced in letting her get close enough to smell things without eating anything harmful (or just gross), and I let her chase critters without ever catching them.
