answered a question Cancel a waiting confirmation?

On the webpage for the request, on the left side of the page with the stay information, is a green button that says "Cancel or Modify Request." Click on that, and you should be given the option of cancelling. I don't believe you are charged until a stay is booked, so you should be okay. If the money has already been taken out of your bank account, call Rover Support to get things straightened out.

answered a question Does this service include cats?

Yes, cat-sitting is an option. You'll need to make it clear in your profile that you only take care of cats.

Under Rates is a space for Cat Care.

answered a question What kind of exercise is right for a german shepherd?

Each dog is an individual, but in general German shepherds need a fair amount of exercise. They were bred to work and like to be active.

The type of exercise is up to you. Running, hiking, and playing ball are common forms. There are also sports such as herding, agility, flyball, etc that you and your shepherd can participate in.

Before beginning an exercise program it is important that your dog be checked out by a vet for any health problems. Make sure his or her hips, elbows, heart, and other body parts are in good condition and can handle the exercise.

answered a question Where can I get my dog spayed?

If you don't have a regular vet that you take your dog to, I recommend finding one. Another option is to look for a spay and neuter clinic in your area.

Due to preoperative procedures and recovery time, in addition to the surgery itself, your dog would need to spend the day at the hospital or clinic. Rushing through the procedure would be detrimental to her health.

answered a question How should I get my dog certified as a therapy dog?

Dogs can be certified as therapy dogs through organizations such as Therapy Dogs International. Google them for more information. Delta Society also has a therapy dog certification process.

answered a question Why does my dog have chronic ear infections?

Chronic ear infections are often associated with allergies. Ear infections are also common in dogs with hanging ears or who spend a lot of time swimming.

If your dog has allergies, there are medications that can help. For dogs with overly-moist ears, special drying agents can be used in the ears. And if your vet prescribes antibiotics, make sure you finish all medication to prevent resistant bacteria.

answered a question What should I bathe a puppy with?

A general cleansing shampoo should be safe for puppies, but if you prefer, you can use a shampoo specially designed for puppies.

answered a question Why does my dog limp only sometimes?

Patterns to look for would be the surface your dog is walking on and if your dog limps when first getting up after lying down. Sometimes joint problems are worse on soft ground. If your dog is older, he or she may have arthritis that he or she "warms out of" after getting up and walking for a bit. Another possible cause, if you have a puppy, is panosteitis. Basically, it's like "growing pains."

answered a question What should I do if my dog has a cold?

While dogs do get respiratory tract infections, normally that doesn't cause them to sneeze. Coughing would be more expected if your dog has a "cold."

Prolonged sneezing often happens when a dog gets a foreign object (foxtail, grass blade, etc.) in the nose. If he's still sneezing, he should be seen by a vet.

answered a question What should I do if my dog wont eat and is throwing up?

I think the best thing to do is have your dog seen by a vet. There are some VERY serious causes for not wanting to eat and vomiting.

answered a question Why does my dog leak urine when lying down?

If it is an older dog, especially a female, it may be due to a weakening of the bladder sphincter muscle. There is medication to help.

answered a question Why does my dog eat horse manure?

Some dogs just like to eat horse manure. Make sure your dog is on a parasite preventive or is getting regular stool checks. You don't want your dog to ingest any worm eggs that might be in the manure.

answered a question What is a dog's dewclaw?

The dewclaw is a remnant from way back when the ancestors of dogs had five toes. Make sure to check the dewclaw nail when trimming the rest of the nails.

Most of the time front dewclaws don't cause a problem, but rear dewclaws tend to be longer and looser. Unless it is in a dog's breed standard to have rear dewclaws, they should be removed. (Front dewclaws can stay as long as they don't cause trouble -- catch on things repeatedly and break.)

answered a question Why does my dog scratch his eyes?

He may have something like dust or other irritant in his eyes. Or he may have allergies. Allergies in dogs usually have skin-related symptoms. Look for licking of the feet and/or rubbing of the ears as well. If your dog will let you, you can rinse out his eyes with saline solution (not regular water, and not lens cleaning solution) in case there is something in his eyes. A trip to the vet is recommended.

answered a question Why does my dog keep coughing?

It sounds like something that should be checked out. How long has he been coughing? Is it a hoarse, dry cough, or is it more like a moist, "phlegmy" cough? Any runny or goopy eyes or nose?

answered a question How often should one bathe a dog with fleas?

Bathing with flea shampoo will only take care of the fleas on the dog at that time and only 10% of the flea population will be on your dog. The other 90% lives in the environment, like in your house and other areas you dog spends time. To treat fleas, you need to get rid of the ones in your house, car, etc as well as on your dog.

There are pills and topical products that are easier to use and more effective than shampoo. Get a recommendation from your vet.

answered a question Why does my dog slide on the carpet?

If it's his or her hind end that he or she is sliding on the carpet, it could be to wipe off the rear end after going to the bathroom. The problem could also be the anal glands.

Try washing your dog's rear end. If that doesn't solve the problem, your dog should be seen at your vet's office to have the anal glands checked.

answered a question Why is my dog throwing up yellow foam?

Vomiting can be from many causes. If you have something poisonous around the house or yard, especially if you find evidence of it been gotten into, your dog should be seen by a vet.

Sometimes a dog will throw up yellow foam when his stomach is empty and irritated. Is your dog eating? How is he acting in general? If he is refusing to eat and/or is lethargic, he should be seen.

answered a question Is there a way to book a different number of drop-in visits per day?

Perhaps you could set up the stay for 1 visit each day, then add on as a miscellaneous charge the second visit of the first day. That's how I would do it.

answered a question Why does my dog make weird noises?

That depends a lot on what kind of weird noise it is.

answered a question is there a promo code for first time users?

Each sitter has their own promo code which first-time users can utilize. Once you have decided on a sitter for a stay (have done the meet-and-greet and you both decide it's a good fit), ask the sitter for his or her code.

Also, occasionally Rover will advertise a code to use (that is not sitter-specific), but I'm not aware of one at this time.

answered a question Can I give my dog a baby aspirin?

It would be best not to give aspirin to your dog. Even if the reason your dog "isn't feeling well" is due to pain, human pain relievers tend to cause problems with an animal's gastrointestinal tract.

What are your dog's symptoms? What is he doing that tells you he isn't feeling well?

answered a question How often does my dog need a rabies shot?

It also depends on the dog's age and the laws of your municipality. In the places I've lived, if a rabies vaccine is given to a dog less than a year old, it is considered a 1-year vaccine. When the dog is given booster shoots (after a year old) it is good for 3 years. An exception to this is if the dog's first rabies vax is given when he or she is over a year old, it is only good for 1 year.

The law may be different where you live; in some places, the longest a rabies vax is good for is 2 years. Regardless, it's not a one-time thing. Your dog will need (legally) to have rabies boosters throughout his life.

And, btw, the actual vaccine that is given is the same product whether it is considered a 1-year or a 3-year vaccine.

answered a question How do I get my dog to stop barking?

Make sure your dog is getting enough exercise and mental stimulation. Try increasing the length of walks and/or playtime, and try interactive toys to keep him or her busy. If your dog is lonely or cold out in the yard, try bringing him or her into the house. If your dog is barking at other dogs walking by, try blocking your dog's access to or view from front windows.

Another cause of barking could be separation anxiety, if it happens when you are gone. Treatment for separation anxiety can be long and difficult, and you should get advice from a trainer or vet.

answered a question Why does my dog keep throwing up?

How is your dog acting in general? Is he less energetic, or not wanting to eat? How are his stools?

If you are sure there isn't anything around the house or yard that he might have gotten into, and he is acting fine other that the vomiting, you can withhold food for 12-24 hours, then give very bland food that will be easier on his stomach. Try cooked and unseasoned meat (chicken, lean hamburger, ground turkey) and a bland carbohydrate source (rice, potatoes). Don't add salt, pepper, butter, etc.

If it's possible that he's eaten something he shouldn't have, or he is lethargic, or not eating, or not defecating, or continues to vomit, I highly recommend he be checked out by a vet.

commented answer Why does my dog keep throwing up?

Baby food that is just pureed meat (no onion powder or other unsafe additives) is fine to give to dogs.

answered a question Why does my dog keep gagging?

I recommend your dog be checked out by a vet to rule out kennel cough, or something worse. How long do the gagging episodes last and how often do they happen? What is your dog doing when a gagging episode starts? Any discharge from his nose or eyes?

answered a question How should I get my dog to stop digging?

There are several remedies that you can try. Possibly your dog is not getting enough exercise and is digging as an energy outlet. Some dogs dig during hot weather to get to the cooler dirt underneath, so make sure your dog has enough shade if outdoors for a length of time.

If your dog is getting enough walks, playtime, and other exercise, and the weather is mild, you can bury chicken wire an inch or so beneath the surface of the ground, so that the dog is not able to dig farther. Another option is when you clean up your dog's stools, put them in the holes your dog has dug. This may stop the digging. A third thing to try is to bury a well-blown-up balloon in the hole. The popping of the balloon when he goes to dig in that area should be aversive.

answered a question What should I do if my dog has dandruff?

While dandruff is more commonly associated with dry skin, it can also happen with oily skin. Make sure your dog is on a good quality food and is being bathed at the proper intervals (not too often). Sometimes supplementing with oils can help dry skin, but check with your vet for the proper type and amount. With oily skin, it would be recommended for your dog to be examined by a vet because there may be an underlying medical condition.

answered a question What can I wash my dog with?

Yes, Dawn is safe to use on an occasional basis, but I would recommend a dog-specific shampoo for regular grooming. I would also recommend not using other brands of dish soap.

The vast majority of human shampoos are not safe for dogs; baby shampoo is the only one that can be used.

There are many types of dog shampoos. Unless your dog has a specific condition, a general purpose dog shampoo can be used. Oatmeal shampoos are good to use, or you can just pick a shampoo with a scent you like.

answered a question How do I know if my dog has an ear infection?

If your dog's ear is infected, it most likely will have a bad smell and will have discharge that is more than just wax. It can be cream-colored or dark, depending on what is causing the infection. Ear cleaning solution will help, but only medication from your vet will actually treat the infection. Without treatment, the infection will get worse and damage your dog's ear, possibly to the point of the infection spreading inside your dog's head and neck. I highly recommend you take him to a vet.
