It’s always been said that a dog is man’s best friend, but it can’t be said enough that your dog’s best friend is you! You little mate just loves to spend time with you – whether that’s chilling at home on the sofa or playing fetch in the park. But if you feel like doing something a bit different with your dog this weekend, we’ve rounded up the best doggy days out in Birmingham that you’re both sure to enjoy.
1. Dog Jog

Always fancied signing up for a 5k but couldn’t bear to do your dog’s favourite activity without him? Well, here’s your solution – the annual Birmingham Dog Jog where you can take part in a fun running race with your dog right by your side. Usually taking place in August each year, we’re certain your pooch won’t mind joining you on all the extra walks and runs. And whether you sprint or amble around the course, there will be a doggy bag jam-packed with goodies and a collar medal waiting for you at the finish line.
You could also use the opportunity to support your favourite doggy charity, such as the RSPCA, Guide Dogs UK, Birmingham Dog’s Home or Dog’s Trust. Why not raise some extra money by hosting a dog-friendly bake sale with some yummy homemade dog treats for your friends, family and work colleagues? Pupcake anyone?

2. Digbeth Dining Club

For a fun foodie experience, bring your dog along to the Digbeth Dining Club where you’ll get to try some of Europe’s finest street food. They absolutely love to welcome canine visitors and provide lots of water bowls, so your dog can stay refreshed while you ponder the culinary delights.
You can choose from a variety of cuisines and delicious desserts, with vendors including The English Indian, Urban Cheesecake, Beef on the Block, Grill Brazil and Bournville Waffle Co. There’s so much on offer we’re sure you’ll keep coming back for more.
The venue is open from Thursday to Sunday and welcomes dogs until 9pm. It’s a bargain at £1 to get in and you should be aware that inside the traders take cash only – but trust us your taste buds will definitely thank you for that trip to the ATM!
3. Crufts

Has your dog got talent? Perhaps you’re the proud owner of the best-behaved Bernese, the prettiest Poodle or the fastest French bulldog in the nation and they’re just waiting for a chance at glory. Well, wait no more – enter to compete at Crufts and you just might take home that illustrious Best in Show trophy.
Crufts has been held annually at the NEC in Birmingham since 1991 and is arguably the biggest and most prestigious dog competition in the world. Only the best of the best get to compete here and your dog must be a pedigree registered with the Kennel Club to be eligible. But if you have an adorable crossbreed, don’t worry, your little mate doesn’t have to miss out on all the fun. In 2000, Crufts launched ‘Scruffts’ – a crossbreed competition with prizes for Most Handsome Dog, Prettiest Bitch, Golden Oldie and Child’s Best Friend. 4. Aston and Blakesley Hall

If you’ve been to all the dog-friendly parks in Birmingham and are looking for some new places to go ‘walkies’, why not explore the gardens of these historic properties?
Aston Hall is a grand Jacobean estate, built in the early 17th century and set in the grounds of what is now a picturesque public park. In the grounds you will find the perfectly manicured Lady Holte’s Garden, which was designed to impress important guests with a spectacular symmetrical pattern and lots of traditional shrubs and foliage – a great location for snapping some insta-worthy photos with your pup!
Blakesley is a slightly less regal but impressive Tudor property, built by a wealthy merchant in the 16th century. Within the grounds you’ll find a traditional herb garden and a lovely orchard that attract lots of bees, birds and butterflies. On a sunny day, bring along a picnic complete with some doggy treats and laze about on the lawn in these idyllic surroundings.
While dogs aren’t allowed to go inside and tour the properties themselves, the good news is that they’re welcome throughout the grounds (keep an eye on where they need to be kept on lead), in the shop and in the tea room at both of these sites. Even better news is that entry to the grounds is free!
5. Hogarths Hotel
