Whether you’re kicking back on a Friday after work, grilling up some steaks on the barbecue or celebrating a special occasion, you might often find yourself sipping a nice cold beer or toasting the champers with your dog nearby. And why should he miss out? While human alcoholic drinks aren’t safe for dogs, we’ve got a clever workaround.
Dogs and Alcohol: Is It Safe?
Sadly, dogs and your favourite brews really don’t go together.
Alcohol is toxic to dogs in direct proportion to a dog’s weight. According to Pet Poison Helpline, alcohol poisoning can cause hypothermia, low blood pressure, seizures, and respiratory failure in dogs. Treatments include induced vomiting (under a vet’s watchful eye,) IV fluids and a dextrose drip.
Plus, hops—a major ingredient in most beers—are also very toxic to dogs, causing elevated body temperature, racing heart, and vomiting. Luckily, most dogs aren’t likely to be around hops themselves (only homebrewers really need to worry about limiting their dogs’ access to actual hops). However, hops in beer are still a concern for dogs.
Grapes and raisins are another highly toxic food for dogs, so regular non-alcoholic wines still aren’t safe for your high-class pooch. In fact, ingesting the fruit could cause sudden kidney failure—so it’s essential to keep dogs away from grapes and raisins at all times.

Luckily for the most discriminating of pup palates, dog beers, wines and even champagnes can be found online and at dog-friendly bars across the nation. Pawsecco anyone?
