Because I work from home, my household is best suited for dogs who are comfortable settling down between play and activity. My own dogs enjoy some playtime, but they are also very good at relaxing when it’s time to be quiet. While I’m working, I need everyone to be able to settle calmly in the house or in their crate. For most dogs, this means being crate trained—not just comfortable going into a crate, but able to relax and settle there when needed. I’m happy to provide breaks and attention throughout the day, with potty/play breaks typically in the morning, around lunchtime, and in the evening. I don’t leave dogs unattended in the backyard, so outdoor time is supervised. Walks are usually once a day, weather permitting, generally in the evening but sometimes in the morning. My home tends to be the best fit for dogs with a lower energy level or those on the calmer end of moderate energy. Younger or playful dogs can absolutely be a good fit if they know how to settle between activities, respect personal space, respond well to redirection, and can relax independently.

Most weekdays follow a comfortable routine built around my work-from-home schedule. We start the morning with breakfast and a couple of trips outside for potty breaks and a little activity before I begin work. Once I’m working, everyone settles down for the first part of the day. We have a midday break with time to go outside, take care of business, and sometimes enjoy a little playtime. Then it’s back to settling down while I finish my workday. Evenings are generally more active, with walks, outdoor time, play, and plenty of attention. Weekends are more flexible and usually include additional breaks, walks, playtime, and time spent together. I do occasionally step out for personal errands or events, but most of the time I’m home. Because my weekdays have a natural rhythm of activity followed by quiet time, dogs who are comfortable relaxing between breaks tend to do especially well here.
