answered a question Is my dog too skinny?

You can determine whether your dog is too skinny by looking at it from both the top and the side. Here is a simple chart to show you what it looks like for a dog to be emaciated (starving/skin and bones), thin (on the skinny side), ideal (perfect weight), heavy (a bit on the chunky side), and grossly obese (way too heavy). If you're still unsure about if your dog is too skinny, you could take your dog to the vet and get their professional opinion.

answered a question Why does my dog's breath smell bad?

Often times bad breath is a sign that they're teeth aren't very healthy. Like humans, dogs need to have their teeth cleaned, whether it be from brushing, chewing on bones, or being cleaned by your vet. The older dogs get, the more their teeth will start to develop tartar. If your dog has pretty droopy jowls like a Mastiff, it's quite possible that food gets stuck in their wrinkly skin, which causes bacteria to grow and flourish. This can cause a foul odor emanating from their mouth. Brushing your dogs teeth often will help prevent tooth decay and keep any unwanted bacteria at bay.

answered a question What kinds of things can cause my dog to shake?

There are several different reasons why a dog might shake. Nervousness, stress, anxiety, excitement, sore muscles, strokes, seizures, overheating, because they're too cold, they're in pain, etc. are all reasons why a dog might shake. It's important to figure out the reason, as knowing the reason will give you the opportunity to best help your dog. Does she usually shake before or after walks? When she's exposed to new situations? When something scary happens like a thunder storm? Is it accompanied with panting? If your dog pants continually, it can be a sign that they're in pain. If you suspect your dog is in pain, it's important to get her checked out by the vet so that you can help her feel good again.

answered a question Where can I get my dog spayed?

Just about any vet should be able to do a good job. If you don't have a vet close by, try checking out your local animal shelters. They will have good references, or might have a vet on staff to perform it for you.

commented answer How much will my dog weigh?

Oops forgot to post the link. Here it is! http://www.puppyweights.com/

answered a question How much will my dog weigh?

If you know what breed of dog he is (or what breeds he is mixed with) you could google those breeds and get a pretty good estimate at what he will weigh. If you have no clue what his breed is- take a look at his paws (: If he has big paws, he will be a big dog. Little paws = little dog,

Also, here is a site that can fairly accurately predict the weight your puppy will be if you know his breed and current weight.

Good luck and congratulations on your puppy!

commented answer How do I change my name and link?

I called the other day and they said they would send an email, which I would then need to send a picture of the marriage license. But they never sent the email. Emailed them and still haven't heard back yet. Hmm I'm not sure what else to do

answered a question Why does my dog have watery eyes?

"Tears" can be caused by many different things. Often times tears are produced due to either allergies or stress. However, if is yellow-ish in color, it can be a sign of an underlying illness or infection. Try to look at his eyes and see if there is anything in them that is causing the irritation. Please do not give him eye drops unless your vet specifically tells you to.

answered a question Why does my dog have crusty eyes?

Please do not give your dog eye drops unless instructed to by your vet. Eye "boogers" every now and then are normal and can be caused by many things. If it persists for a long period of time, it is something to keep an eye as it could be from allergies, an infection or other illness.

answered a question When can my dog get pregnant?

A female dog can only get pregnant when she is in heat. She will be the most fertile around 11-15 days into her cycle.

answered a question Why does my dog pee on his front legs?

Some breeds are more susceptible to doing this than others. Its generally a matter of anatomy and the way a dog is formed. Some male dogs pee is just naturally "aimed" towards it's front legs. I've even seen some dogs accidentally pee on their belly and front legs. His owners kept baby wipes on them at all times for incidents like that.

answered a question Why is my dog so skinny?

What breed is your dog? Some breeds are naturally thinner than others. Your dog may just have a higher metabolism as well, or may burn a lot of calories during it's exercise (from walks or running around in the yard). Try feeding your dog more. Monitor it's behavior closely. If it starts acting lethargic or shows signs of illness, get it checked out by the vet.

answered a question Why does my dog shiver for no reason?

There are a variety of reasons why a dog may shiver. Here is a list of reasons why a dog would shiver.

  • He/she is cold (If you touch your dog, he/she may not feel physically cold because they're body temperature is usually warmer than a humans. be careful during winter times, as dogs can get cold easily, especially smaller dogs)
  • Out of anxiety or fear (could be from thunderstorms, loud noises, travel, change of environment, etc.)
  • Out of excitement (about to go on a walk, get a treat, etc.)
  • He/she has learned that shivering results in a desired outcome (like being babied or given attention)
  • From medical and physiologic problems. (Pain or illness can cause dogs to shiver)
  • Some toxins can cause convulsions

If your dogs shivering seems out of the ordinary, get it checked out by the vet

answered a question Why does my dog keep panting?

There can be numerous reasons for why dogs may pant. Dogs pant because: They are hot, they are nervous, they are excited, they are sick or in pain If your dog isn't hot, hasn't just exercised, isn't nervous or excited about something, then it may be good to get it checked out by your vet. If your dog is older, his joints may be achy or he may be feeling sore and stiff.

answered a question Why does my dog keep making choking noises?

What kind of dog do you have? If your dog is a short-nosed breed (like an English Bulldog, Pug, Boston Terrier, etc) then this is unfortunately normal. Short-nosed breeds have a harder time breathing and often times will make snorting or choking sounds all throughout their life. However, if your dog isn't one of those, then it is very important to make sure he isn't actually choking on anything. He may have something like a bone stuck in his throat. If your dog will allow you to, try opening his mouth gently and looking inside to see if you can see anything stuck in there. If your dog is snappy or not tolerating you near his mouth, have the vet check. Another possibility is that your dog has allergies. This can also be determined by the vet. We can only give our best guesses as to what may be causing this, but your vet will be able to give you a definite answer.

answered a question Is my dog gay?

When male dogs mount/hump each other, it is not a sexual act to them. This is essentially a display of dominance. The one humping is showing that he is the dominant one in the group. However, if the two males will both mount each other/take turns, this can be a sign that they view each other as equal or are still "jockeying" for rank

asked a question Not all of the pictures sent to clients show up on my profile?

I have taken a lot of pictures of several different dogs, but only 50 pictures of about 4 different dogs are showing up on my profile. Why is this? I've looked after way more than 4 dogs and have sent way more than 50 pictures. I'd really like potential clients to be able to see all of the pictures taken so they can see the variety of dogs and what all we do. Please help me understand why this is happening. Thank you

answered a question How do I get my dog to stop eating poop?

If you put a spoonful of canned pumpkin in each meal, it'll make the poop repulsive to your dog. The pumpkin is healthy and tastes great in the meal, but is an excellent deterrent once it comes out the other end

answered a question Why does my poop smell like dog poop?

answered a question What badges are available and how do I achieve them?

I had this happen to me twice. Both were with new clients who turned out to be very wealthy. They were able afford it but were simply taking advantage of someone who is too nice at times. I like to help my clients out when I can, especially if they're going through a tough time. But both times the owners ended up causing more stress than what it was worth. I left those jobs, having given my all to care for those dogs, feeling exhausted mentally and physically, feeling worthless and feeling like I was no good. All because these clients were people who would take advantage of any kindness, who would expect perfection, and just so happened to have neighbors report me to the HOA simply because they knew the owners were out of town. Their claims were false, and there wasn't anything I could do about it other than share my side.

I would suggest either keeping your prices the same, especially since you are already compromising to meet their needs with their large dog, or offering the $20 off coupon that Rover gives to first time Rover clients. But don't allow them to disrespect you by taking advantage of you. You deserve to be treated with respect and anyone who doesn't will honestly be too much trouble. No matter how great their dogs are, if the owners are disrespectful and pushy, it's not worth it.

answered a question client wants me to walk dog/bring him to the dog park for 2 hours and booked for only 1 30min walk, what do I do?

As Walt suggested, it would be best to talk with the clients first and let them know that you a accidentally forgot to adjust the price for the two hour walks that they needed. Then go ahead and modify the walks. They have already told you that cost is not an issue. If for whatever reason you can't modify if after already booking in, then contacting Rover support would be your best bet.

answered a question How do I handle client keys?

I do dog walking and pet sitting, so often times am handling keys from multiple clients. I honestly only get one key, put it on a ribbon with the name of the dog and then keep all the keys on a carabiner clip. I'm hoping to start getting key labels that attach directly onto the key, as sometimes the names on the ribbons can rub off. But there is no need to get more than one key. Asking for multiple implies that you are irresponsible enough to lose their keys, which could imply that you aren't responsible enough to care for their pets. If you have a history of losing keys, ask for a garage code instead and keep the code written down in your phone.

answered a question Why does my dog eat birds?

A lot of dogs actually enjoy hunting - its fun for them. They are predators, so it can be incredibly fulfilling for a dog to hunt, catch, and eat prey. Some breeds have higher prey drive than others. This behavior can be very good or very bad, depending on you and your dog. It may be a behavior that you want to stop, as your dog could begin preying on other small animals - bunnies, rats, even small dogs or cats. Some owners think its cute at first when their dog tries to chase after something on a walk, but this can soon get out of hand. If you are a hunter though, this could be a behavior that you nurture and fine tune.

answered a question Why does my dog eat grass?

Dogs can't digest grass because they don't have the enzymes that are needed to break down the fibers. This means that there is very little nutritional value in the grass for the dogs. It's possible that the dog is just eating it to eat, especially if it's between meals. Another possibility is that it's due to feeling nauseous or having gastric reflux. Grass may be a temporary fix for both of those. Don't be surprised if your dog later vomits the grass though - this is normal. Some dogs may eat grass out of obsessive-compulsive behavior (I have personally seen dogs go after every single rock due to this.) If it's out of obsession, this behavior needs to stop. Another reason a dog may eat grass is that its not getting all of the nutrition it needs in its current diet.

answered a question How much should my dog weigh?

Knowing the breed(s) would be incredibly beneficial in providing a more accurate answer. However, there is a chart that can be very helpful in determining whether your dog is underweight, ideal, or overweight. This may vary a little depending on the breed(s) of your dog, as some breeds are meant to be very slim (greyhounds) while others are meant to be pretty stocky (bulldogs)

The chart in the link provided below shows the view of a dog from above as well as from the side. It also includes descriptions to help show you what to look for.

answered a question Why is my dog lactating?

There could be a couple different possibilities why your dog is lactating. If she is pregnant, it's normal for her to begin lactate. Most don't begin producing milk until the puppies are born or a few days before. Some have been known to produce a little milk a couple months before. Unless your dog is producing a lot of milk before the puppies are born, then it's not cause for worry.

If you know for sure that your dog is not pregnant, then she could be having a false pregnancy. This usually occurs due to hormonal imbalances, especially after your dogs first heat cycle. Her belly may become swollen and she may become more moody as well as lactate. Normally this clears itself up within three weeks. But producing milk can be a painful issue, especially if the pressure isn't being relieved. If she seems to be in pain, please take her to your vet as she is at risk of mastitis.

Another possibility is that your dog has a health issue that is causing her to appear to lactate. Sometimes the secretion is milk while other times it is white pus instead. Mammary glad cancers/infections can cause this and require immediate vet attention. Another possibility would be hypothyroidism which makes your dogs hormones go crazy. This can result in your dog lactating. Ask your vet for a full blood workup to check for any thyroid issues.

answered a question Why won't my dog stop whining?

Dogs can whine for a wide variety of reasons. Often times dogs will whine because they are anxious, excited, anticipating something, nervous, scared, or are wanting something from you. They may be needing to go outside. They may be wanting your attention. They may be wanting to go for a walk. They may just want a treat. If you have given your dog attention while it was whining then it's possible that it has learned to whine in order to get your attention. Sometimes they may think that if they wine or bark, then they will get their food faster or get what they want faster. I would suggest trying to read your dogs body language in order to pinpoint what it's whining about. Context is everything.

answered a question Should I neuter my dog?

Unless you are planning to breed your dog, Id HIGHLY recommended neutering him. If he isn't neutered and isn't allowed to breed, your dog will develop a lot of pent up frustration. He will desire to mate (every 6 months I believe) and if that desire is not fulfilled, a lot of undesirable behaviors can and will ensue. His scent will cause fights among other males. He will be more prone to running away, destroying furniture and personal belongings due to his pent up frustration, he will challenge your authority more and more, etc. Its not nice to the dog or anyone else to not neuter him if he's not going to be a breeder.
