My husband accidentally closed the bedroom door with a dog inside and went to the store. The carpet was damaged at but I consider it my fault. It's a sitters responsibility to watch the dogs in their care and utilize prevenitive measures to insure dogs are crated or put into play pens if necessary.

That sounds like a lot of damage due to separation anxiety. This is likely going to be one of your lessons learned of what questions to ask, assessing the dog's well-being, figuring out how long a dog can be unattended and what activity level it needs, and how to protect the dog guest and your home when not being observed. Some dogs need more exercise than others and some need more companionship than others. You may also consider adding indoor dog gates and asking the owner if the dog has a crate and uses it.
