A dog destroyed my house. What does insurance cover? What has been your experience?

A client told me her dog was fine to be left out of the crate. It dug holes in my carpet, not to mention other things. I can suck up the costs of the other repairs, but not the carpet. I am renting. What does insurance cover? What has been your experience?

Hi Akeeba! It is definitely a tough situation to be in! I have had a couple of dogs now that have destroyed things because of separation anxiety. It's awkward to have the conversation, but in both cases, the pet parents paid to have my home repaired/the item replaced.

I would make sure to take pictures of everything. If it's still an active stay, let the parents know that the dog is having some issues. I usually wait until they come to pick up their dog to discuss the specifics and talk about reimbursement. But at least they are aware that there's an issue.

I hope this is helpful! All the best to you as you work it out!

As some who this has happened to before, unfortunately Rover's insurance does NOT cover damaged carpet in your home. :(

Yep, left a dog out of its crate and have a hole in my area rug. This rug is old and stained so I'm not too bothered. I had also been picking it up as it is on a concrete floor, missed it that time! You just have to look forward to any hazards like that. I am fortunate to have a rec room in my house with that concrete floor so my bad I didn't pick the carpet up that time. Same dog also ate a $65 electronic dog door collar. Who knew it could get the collar off!? Now I know, just sucked it up to experience and bought another one. Didn't ask for compensation because owner didn't ask me to put it on the dog.

As a fellow sitter, I'm sorry to hear that damage occurred. My understanding is that Rover's Terms of Service do Not cover pet care service providers for property damage. Link follows: https://www.rover.com/tos/?ref=footer However, you may want to contact Rover Support at your earliest convenience. Even though, it probably will not be covered, they can make a note of it in the dog's file and perhaps give other guidance.

If this stay is still continuing, I'd be inclined to use the crate if the pet-parents told you their dog used it, let them know in general terms that their pup may have separation anxiety based on when not crated, the following happened... , state you want their dog to have a good stay and ask what can they suggest to relieve anxiety. Also, if you can take the dog on long frequent walks to burn off some of that energy (if you're not already) that's probably going to help too.
