What are the rules or restrictions involved with bringing a dog into the US?

Hi all -

I'm trying to adopt an amazing dog from Canada, but I'm not sure what I need to do to bring a dog into the US. Does anyone have any information, tips, or advice?

Thanks! Julia

We moved back to the states from Hawaii 2 years ago. Hawaii does not have rabies, so our dogs were never vaccinated for it. There was a 6 month quarantine. If we didn't start the procedures 6 months ahead of time, our dogs would have to have been borded for 6 months, at our expense.

Check with a veterinarian about what's required for a U.S. health certificate. Many vets do health certificates for dogs to travel to other countries, so they are likely to know what resource you can check about a U.S. health certificate.

You should check with your state specifics and then what homeland security says what documents they may need. Always call. These kinds of things change like the weather and it would be the best way to get all the answers. Start with your state animal affairs and then work your way up.

Here is the information from the Centers for Disease Control, which is mainly about the dog being vaccinated against rabies:

Additional information can be found here:

Make sure the rescue you're looking into allows out of country adoptions. Many will not adopt across the border. If they do allow foreign adoptions they should already have all the paperwork in place and be familiar with the laws, though it's in your best interest to double check, since not every rescue organization is equal in terms of their adherence to laws and regulations. If you find the rescue unable or unwilling to help facilitate the process, you may want to look a little deeper into their operations because you may find other areas where they cut corners to adopt out more animals, and that's a sign that they do not always have the best interests of their animals in mind.

I remember when I was going to bring me dog overseas to live with me the restrictions were limited to some things such as:

  1. Make sure you dog will not bite strangers, if a dog bites it can be quarantined.
  2. Aggressive behavior is generally not tolerated and in most countries if a dog acts aggressive, it will not be accepted.
  3. Behavior us paramount when it comes to bringing a dog into any country.

There are many more rules when you a bring a dog into or out of a country, but, I do know that all countries count a dog's behavior a one of the biggest. There are also certain breeds that can be restricted so makes sure you check on that as well. I hope me own experience helps you some and congratulations. Take care

It depends on where the dog is coming from. The USDA, Animal and Plant Health Inspection service (APHIS) website has the latest information. Follow the "Imports & Exports" link on the left side.
