What is a "cancellation penalty" and who receives the money?

A $90 "cancellation penalty" has turned up in a booking that our sitter modified for us. I can find no mention of who sets this amount and who the money goes to. (If the money goes to Rover, then Rover ended up making more money than the sitter did.) Is this cancellation penalty standard, and who sets the amount? Does the money go to Rover or to the sitter?

Shoot! I had a very comprehensive response to this and it disappeared. Ugh!

In any event, I've never heard of anything called a cancellation penalty. You are going to have to call Rover Customer Support at [Edit: Rover’s contact options have changed. Visit the Rover Help Center at https://support.rover.com/ to find the phone number, help articles, or chat with the team] and ask them to explain it in detail. I would expect Rover to keep 100% of their service fee that you paid. However, I wouldn't expect them to try to recoup any of the revenue they lost for the days you've cancelled out on. That revenue comes from the percentage they take from the sitter.

Ask them for a detailed breakdown of the amount.
