Boarding Question?

Hi all,

Quick question about boarding. Is the client typically responsible for providing all aspects of the care? For instance, if I'm having a cat board with me, is the client responsible for bringing the food, litter box, toys, bed? Or is the boarder supposed to have these items if needed?

Before you book a stay, you need to discuss all this with a client prior booking!

I don’t board cats. Neither my dog nor a cat would like that arrangement. And I think cats do far better if they can have a sitter provide either housesitting or drop in services.

That said, yes, the client is always responsible for providing food and whatever comfort items their pet needs. A sitter may have treats that they offer the pet. I would caution to only do so after you’ve already discussed with the owner during a meet and greet or in messages what their pet can eat. The reason for doing so as to avoid allergies, and the possibility of a sensitive stomach resulting in diarrhea or the like. Many sitters will have toys & bedding that a visiting pet can use. Some will also stock P pads or other indoor relief solutions. Some sitters prefer using some of their own supplies as opposed to moving a lot of someone else’s stuff into home. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with you asking for what you need. (“When you bring feline name, please bring……”)

I only board dogs, but I do go over what the pet owner needs to bring during our Meet & Greet. I also send them a note the day before drop-off to remind them of what is required and what is optional.

The only required things are food and meds, plus an appropriate leash (I do not accept retractable types), and I.D. tags on their pet. If they want to bring beds, toys, bowls, etc., they are optional because I have extras. Some of my owners keep a go bag all packed for their pets that has everything they need.

When I used to board cats I would always inform the client to bring a cat bed, toys, bowls, food, treats, medication, litter, litter spoon, and everything the cat might need for her happy stay. Same as with dogs, bring your leash, harness, blanket, bed, bowls the dog likes, food, treats, meds, used tshirt with the client's scent, toys, kongs etc. Many dogs only like their own bed and bowls and toys.
