How cold is too cold?

Temps are predicted to be as cold as -6 during the middle of the day this week with real feel being as low as -30. I offered to do potty breaks vs walks on those days - is that reasonable? Other suggestions?

I put an extreme weather disclaimer on my profile. Feel free to copy and make changes to suit your own policy. The temperatures I listed are veterinary guidelines. I have one client I need to be firm with but everyone else has been wonderful.

"About Severe Weather: I take all weather advisories seriously! * When the heat index is above 90 degrees, walks will be cut short for your pet's safety and for my own. We will use up the remaining time getting pets and belly rubs or playing in doors. Water will be available for your pet on our walks. * I don't mind walking in the rain but thunder and lightning is where I draw the line. Walks may be early or delayed depending on the forecast. Your flexibility is appreciated. * In winter, if the temperatures dip below 20 degrees we may need to talk about turning our walk in to a drop-in visit. I will always communicate with my dog owners if a change of plan is necessary due to dangerous weather and temperatures."

I've been a walker for 3 years on the Rover platform and when bad weather hits all you can do is adjust to the conditons. Too hot, too cold, too rainy, lots of snow the pups get a potty break with a short walk then back inside for playtime for the balance of the 30 minute visit. I have yet to have one client complain as they understand the weather and want their pups to stay safe. Best of luck

Thanks - I too have walked for Rover for 3 years. I’ve never canceled a walk. Rain, ice, snow, I’ve been more dependable than the post office. Which is why I figured my clients would be ok with however things turn out this week. It’s me that doesn’t want to be out in such extreme cold

We having the worst winter in my lifetime here in Chicago. I bring hot water now to unstick frozen lockboxes. I've even bought booties for a regular dog because I didn't want her owners to feel criticized by recommending them, and I love this dog so much. I bring a towel. Lots of things not provided

If its dangerously cold I would speak to the owner and hopefully they agree to a shorter walk/potty break and then some inside snuggles and playing with the dogs chew toys etc.

Yes, it is very reasonable. Dogs shouldn't be out for prolonged periods either during such weather. So long as their dogs are to have a potty break, then the client shouldn't have a problem with it. Just make sure they understand how you propose to take care of their pet.

Thank you.

The other night a client requested an hour walk for his dog in 6° weather on the lakefront which has a terrible wind chill factor. This dog was not a "winter-friendly" breed. It was too far for me to get to in time but I was disturbed that they wanted such a long walk.
