Aware of this scam?

Hi! I’ve read a couple of other posts here about a scam house-sitting request that was nearly identical to the one I just got. Those posts were from 2016 and 2017, so I just wanted to let everyone know that they’re still going on and what to look for! I went to report this to Rover, but his profile has already been deleted, less than 24 hours later! (And so the button “report this conversation” has disappeared.)

Be aware of a suspicious combination of: - A newly opened profile - No photos - Very minimal information on profile - Out-of-state; says they are moving to your area - Messages have strange wording and details - Wants to offer extra fees - Asks for another way to contact you, such as email - Asks for your personal information or bank information - Asks you to cash a large check and “keep a portion for your fee”

I got a request yesterday from someone with a profile opened the same day, with no photos and no information filled out about the dog. He said he could not do a meet-and-greet because he was all the way across the country in Maryland and would be moving to the area for work. The house-sitting request was only for a few days, but he wanted me to start the very day they would be arriving in town, and then added other really odd details, such as “I may need you to take him to the vets periodically.” Really? In a 5-day house sitting visit?

He did keep replying to my messages on Rover, but there was odd wording and he started to seem like he was commanding me. Some examples: “Specification of job include taking him for a walk, periodic grooming and help in feeding is also required. Can you render these services?” and “Give me your email I will like to write to you in more details” and “We will have a meet and greet on the 26th. You will start on the 26th.”

I smelled SCAM reeking from the whole interaction on Rover so I provided one of my junk email addresses to see what he would send me. He waited until the next day and then sent a HUGE email loaded with totally unnecessary details and attached a couple of pictures. He told me he had a Chesapeake Bay Retriever three times, but sent pictures of a yellow Lab!!

Here is the email he sent, full of ridiculously unnecessary details. I want everyone to recognize this scam! The next step is where they have their “financier” send you a big check to cash to deposit to some other account, and to keep a fee for yourself. The only thing that will happen is that you will lose all your money when it bounces.

The email:
“ How are you today and thanks for your response regarding the offer I put up for Pet Service, He is a 70lbs Chesapeake Bay Retriever. I need someone with a reputable pet careservice so ... (more)

I got this years ago, not exactly the same but close. The Rover app protects us all from this. Never do business off the Rover site!!!!!

I have gotten a scam including a fake check. I went to my bank reported it varied it was fake. The profile has been flagged. But never accept a payment before service or not thru rover.

I just got a similar request from an Andrew James who, supposedly, has an Alaskan husky named Jay. His profile had little information, and the email he sent me was almost identical to yours, mentioning the fish and his wife Marissa, etc. I thought the request was very strange.

I have gotten this same exact email when I posted my services on Craigslist. And then again once I posted my rover on Facebook. They would say that they’d pay me hundreds of dollars if I stayed in their apartment.

I just received an almost identical message. Good to know !

I get one of these a week and scary. I wonder what their plan is once i meet them? Kidnap?

I almost fell for it but rembered training. Asked several times to join Rover. Request were ignored and I knew my mind was right they are scamming me. I gave no information.

I am removing craigslist post. Not sure if craigslist and facebook post have anything in common for scammers.

I received one of these 2 weeks ago. Dog was described as a 15 pound Shepard, but pic showed a yellow lab. They stopped responding after I insisted on a meet and greet. Then Rover sent a message that this request was flagged. Just rec'd request for a 2 week stay for a dog with the same description.

I did not respond and just reported it to Rover. Clearly a scam.

Oh wow. I'm so glad I found this thread. I just got this EXACT message, only with the names changed. I definitely thought it was a little suspicious and had a bad feeling about it. I can't believe this is still going on.

I just recieved this message two days ago, and am still in contact with this person... literally the exact same email, just different owner name, dog name, and breed. I only gave him an email I don't care for, but no other information. This was very helpful, thank you.

His name is Gregory Burnley, with 1 year old, 68 lbs "serbian" husky named Drake.

I got the same scam but a little different. I gave a fake name knowing it was a scam. I received a check today for $2400 from an attorney’s office in Plano, TX. I told the scammer it was too much and It is going back to the attorneys office. I called the attorneys office today.

I wish I could paste the fake profile here.

Got a scammer too just today! So it’s still going on!

I got something similar just a few minutes ago. This lady used some exact wording as the scam above, but she offered me $500 weekly. I am so glad I came on here and read this so very helpful. Thank you for sharing.

This just happened to me today. A woman named Debra wanted me to walk her 2 dogs 3x a week, 30 min a day. The wording was strange & sounded demanding. Then made the dates different than requested (more). Wanted to text off the app. Wanted me to buy supplies out of my pocket before even meeting..

I just got this scam and it was unfortunately my first Rover request. I reverse image searched all of the three photos and they were stolen from the first hits on the internet. It never got off the Rover platform because I was already wary when they barely had a profile filled out for the dog.

I got a similar scam request. Originally came from Kim from Rover, looking for an experienced sitter to watch her boss dogs and to email her at dorcas.arnold778@hotmail.com, asked for personal info and they were gonna send me a check in the mail and were moving to louisville. Scammers suck!

📣 Adding this Nov 10th 2022! 📣

Got this "My uncle is moving countries and needs a sitter, here's his email" blah blah message on Rover. Not the first time older people needed me to just call or email them because texting and Rover is hard for them. Lol But here's the emails they sent me. They TMI a ton (first red flag), but I figured I'd share the whole thing since these jerks are still at it. :T Keep an eye out!

"Your prompt email just after my niece contacted you shows you are a punctual person. It's a good thing I found this platform to help reach out to you otherwise I am not sure how I would have been able to get in touch with a sitter not to talk to or employ one. Anyway, my name is Alan Hardsete. I am an HIV/Aids cure researcher/critical care specialist. I will be relocating to your neighborhood from Paris. Well at least I hope it's in close proximity to where you reside. I am coming down there to manage the health of the CEO of a private company. Hence why I need someone that will help in sitting my English bulldog.

Which city are you living in?

Hours and days are none specific and that would depend on your availability and flexibility. should you have other jobs I am willing to still accommodate your time schedule. My dog is so important to me. He was a gift from my late father. His name is Eddy and has a very soft temper, he is very playful and due to what I would be doing out there, I wouldn't have the time to walk and play with him. Kindly make known to me the days you would be available and time and we would work it out.

I am looking at 8 hours a week. You can decide to split the hours daily depending on how convenient it is for you each day. That simply means you can do 2 hrs. today and 1 hr. tomorrow and 2 hrs the next day. It's pretty much up to you. I am willing to pay up to $300 weekly. If you believe you are a good fit for this position and you will prove yourself to be a reliable and good person, I will give you the job.

Kind regards,

Alan."

Blah blah I mention a meet and greet..

"Thanks for your swift response and happy to know. more about you. I and my family will be living in Rancho…You can work any 2hours from 9am-11pm... We will be coming into town on the 28th of November so let me know when it's most convenient for you to start and also my financial Clerk will make a check to you before our arrival. You will receive a Cashier's check in which you will deduct your wages of $300 for the first week and the remaining funds will be used to buy foodstuffs and ... (more)

Be careful everyone, they are getting trickier and more dangerous! I suspect, that I missed becoming the victim of a predator set up!

I got a request from a guy today, his newly created profile only had a pic of his dogs. He was requesting house sitting services over a date range. I asked him to provide me more info about his dogs before scheduling a meet/greet. Not more than a minute later, I got a different request from a lady to come watch her cat every other day for three days but the booking request was for only two days. In my profile it says I need at least three days advance notice but she was insistent I meet up with her TODAY, ASAP. as she was not going to be available otherwise. When I replied back that I was unavailable to meet/greet today, she said she would look for someone else as she was going out of town tomorrow. Then a few minutes later, the original guy replied to my message to him about house sitting and his two dogs. Suspicious that the requests would come in so close together! Almost overlapping each other!

The first guy came back that the rover app was glitching and that my message was "breaking up". IN his message he wanted me to text him directly and provided me a phone number to text him at and he outlined that he was looking for weekly services (not a specific date range) . My fishy meter is going off big time with these requests.

Lessons learned: - predators will try all sorts of diversionary tactics to get you to agree. To create a sense of urgency, or distract you from their true intentions. Always be wary and protect yourself by asking a lot of questions, and using logic to think through a situation before accepting any booking!

I think I may also be getting scammed. His profile was created same day of contact, no photo. Initially his profile said he lived in the bronx and then he said he lived in my area. Then he gave me a phone number to contact him off the app. While on the phone with him, he offered to pay me more than what I was charging.

I got sent the fake check today. This is the first time I ever accepted an offer off Rover site. It seems someone already reported the profile thankfully. So scary, people suck, I’m just trying to work!

Someone just tried to scam me the same way! What did you do once you received the check? I don't understand how they stand to benefit from this scam? I imagine the check would bounce so how does that help them???

Newer Rover here, and yup just got almost a carbon copy of this. Messages sent early in the morning, but oddly enough they ask me to text a different number, than the one they are contacting me from. The person spoke quite oddly in text, same recipe as all these others, saying they have a wife, would be moving from out of state, can't do a meet & greet, etc. Finally when they were saying, they'd need my full name & address, I knew something was up. You all can see, this is December 8th, 2020, this is STILL going on. Thank you to OP and everyone else who posted, this was the first result that came up from a Google search for, "Rover scam." I'll be mindful to look out for this in the future!

Wow, it's been a couple of years since I've been active on here, and I've forgotten what the signs of a scam are. Good thing I checked here! I just got a message yesterday and he wanted my personal phone number (which I stupidly gave, but I haven't responded to the text). Here's what was sent to me below. Very similar wording to some of what I've been reading. I'll be blocking this phone number and reporting the profile.

"Thanks for sharing me your phone number on Rover and thanks for understanding me,I am delighted to share this detail that involves the supervision of my pet. More importantly, the custody of my beloved dog. My name is Tyler and my wife’s name is Shelley. My dog is at the moment living with my pregnant wife in Nevada Avenue, southeast corner of Colorado Springs, but on the verge of moving into our new home located here in the city. I recently got promoted at work thus making me very busy most of the time once i resume working fully. I am currently here to finalize some-paper works for the office, and more also, to supervise furnishing of the new house. My wife also runs a small scale event planning service that she runs on contract basis. Thus, limiting care for the dog once she arrives. This is a huge change for us, so this is where i hope you come in and offer us your assistance because i want everything to move smooth and stress-free during this transition, especially with Tom.

Thanks, Tyler."

Also, WHO NAMES THEIR DOG TOM??

This is happening to me right now! A woman named Carolyn Meyer contacted me to either sit or board her yellow lab, Lyonel. She said she was moving to my area from New Mexico and that the moving company had her dog. She said she had to fly to Turkey last minute to do a research project for the EPA and that it had been her dream, etc etc. I thought it was weird a moving company had her dog but ignored my suspicions because she offered me double the amount of the stay "for my trouble." I stupidly gave her my address and phone number, she sent me a questionnaire on a different website to "make sure she could trust me to sit her dog." She told me her company that sent her to Turkey would be sending me a check for $400. Then later she said the company made a mistake and was sending me $2000 and that $1600 of it was for the moving company, and asked me to cash the check and pay the movers. I figured it out today that it's all a scam, even though I already knew but was hopeful. She gave me a legitimate address near my house so I'll be going to that house to let the real owners known their house is being used as a scam!

I don’t usually make comments, but I feel like I need to share this because things like this make my blood boil and I want to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone on here. If you see this message or anything like it, do yourself (and everyone on Rover) a favor and report it!

Hi guys! STILL HAPPENING as of March 2020. I get a request for two week house sitting from a new profile.

Anyways, the message seems normal: “ My dog is very friendly with everyone around. He also sleeps with me at night time and he is only my alarm to wake up. He is very Smart, fun, and very playful. I love him and he’s brought so much joy!”

So I respond with questions about the dogs (Sam’s) schedule and he replies “ Awesome! It seems this piece of app keeps freezing up a lot on my handheld. I think that shouldn't be a distraction to make things workout for us. Do you mind if I get your cell number so we can text and talk about it?”

I give him my number (yes yes I know, red flag, but I didn’t think it was a scam at the time,) and he says he’ll send out a text soon. Only a few minutes later do I get the whole usual shindig I’ve been seeing on this thread:

“ Thanks for sharing me your phone number on Rover and thanks for understanding me, I am delighted to share this detail that involves the supervision of my pet. More importantly, the custody of my beloved dog. My name is Paul and my wife’s name is Shelley . This is a huge change for us, so this is where i hope you come in and offer us your assistance because i want everything to move smooth and stress-free during this transition, especially with Sam. Regards; Paul”

Anyways, he goes on a bit more about the foods that Sam eats and how he wants an estimate on the food and upkeep and whatnot.

Lmaoooo why are they so bad at scamming?

Be careful out there guys!

I'm in CO Springs and got a request that kind of rubbed me wrong.. maybe two.. so I came here to find information about possible scams and if owners are required to have a background check as well. Your comment here is relatable. The guy today didn't go so in depth but had some similar language.
