Really it is up to them. Perhaps you could let them know during the meet and greet when you need an answer by. Also, if you send a booking request, they only have 48 hours to respond. You could tell them kindly that if they do not confirm before that 48 hours is up, you won't be able to send another request based on personal scheduling decisions.
rover once told me that the request would stay active until the actual start date. I would message them and ask if they still want you to house sit for them. Tell them you are getting other requests but want to give them first priority. If no answer to this message in 24 hours, archive as owner didn't respond.
