When do you cancel?

With regards to weather, under what circumstances would you cancel a walking appointment? I have been walking dogs in the rain with no issue. I always ask owners how their dogs do as far as walking or going potty in the rain. I have not had a dog yet in which the owner said there would be an issue. But today I got to thinking....what if were thunder and/or lightening? Or what about cold winter weather temperatures? Do you ever cancel due to weather? Or cancel a walking appointment and turn it into a drop-in instead?

Hi Kelly:

Very good and valid questions! At the meet & greet, I always tell the (potential) client about my personal inclement weather policy: If schools/businesses are closed due to weather, I don't leave my home (for anything). That's really only for winter. I always ask if there is any fear of storms/ thunder, etc. and tell the potential clients that I'll try my best to work around storms..either starting before, or preferably after. My mom was raised on a farm, so paying close attention to the weather has always been part of my life....and is no different now. If it's storming, too hot, or too cold, etc. the walks will either get shortened, with the remaining time as a drop in visit, or become a drop in visit for the entire 30 minutes. If you are priced the same for walks and drop ins , there will be no reason to officially cancel the walk, just note it on the Rover card if you are using it.....or leave a note if you are not.
