Do you increase rate for overnight if you're staying the majority of both days?

I just booked a Saturday overnight and the owner is asking me to be there at 8 am on Saturday and I'll stay until 6 pm on Sunday. That's technically only one night, so the rate is coming up as my overnight rate, however it seems to me like the rate should be a little more since I'm staying almost two full days with their dog. What is the protocol for increasing your rate in this circumstance, especially if this is a repeat client and they were charged my regular overnight rate before?

Referring to it as your overnight rate adds to the confusion. You are housesitting and that is charged in 24-hour increments. If the client wants you to start at 8 am one day and stay until 6 pm the next, that is 10 hours, in the range of daycare hours. So you should modify the request and bill for one day of daycare. If this happened before with this client, then say you weren't aware of the how the prior one went through and have found out that it is very important to get the entire stay covered by Rover's insurance. While I do allow a bit of leeway (about 2 hours), I don't tell clients, otherwise they'd be taking advantage of me by always using up the extra 2 hours.

BTW, that dog Reggie in your profile looks amazingly like my dog.

Hi Carla: Overnights are considered up to 24 hours, so if the owner wants you past 8:00 am Sunday, they would need to pay an additional Daycare fee for you staying there until 6:00 pm. You would have to discuss this with them and then modify the request.

When I've had clients request something like this I let them know that anything past 4 hours from the 24 hour mark incurs an 'extra' fee. I'm not super strict with mine, and tend to base it on the amount of extra time they're asking. In this situation I would suggest you tell the owner that the overnight fee is only for a 24 hour period, so since they'd like you to stay 10 hours past that you'll need to charge your daycare rate as well. I've never had an issue telling owners about this and I think most understand, but it's up to you how strictly you want to enforce this.

As others have mentioned, the rate for house sitting is understood to be for one 24-hour period. Based on that, it would be perfectly reasonable to discuss this with the client and modify the booking rate accordingly. I will say, that I tend to be pretty flexible about this, especially if it's a repeat client and/or a longer stay. However, for one or two night stays, it would make more sense to enforce a 24-hour policy and add a fee for any additional time.
