Do you charge extra to pick-up a dog?

Hi --

I am new to Rover and am still figuring out the ins and outs of the service. I agreed to watch someone's dog next week and will be boarding the dog at my house overnight. The owner said the dog has a crate and he would bring the dog and the crate by on Tuesday morning and then come to pick him up on Wednesday evening so I booked the stay. The owner asked me this morning if there was any chance I could actually pick up the dog from his house on Tuesday morning. While yes, I could pick up the dog, I sort of feel like it would be a pretty inconvenient thing for me to do before work during the week (there is quite a bit of traffic).

Where I am just starting off and trying to build clientele, I feel as though I am more willing to go out of my way and charge less money for my stays. But considering I am watching his dog for more than 24 hours (Tuesday morning - Wednesday night) and the client is only being charged for $25 for a nightly rate, it feels like I am not really making out on this deal. When Rover takes out their 20% I am essentially making $20 to pick up his dog and watch the dog for over 24 hours.

Does anyone have any suggestions as how to handle these situations? I feel like I should be able to tack on a fee for picking up the dog but I also don't want to drive away a potential client.

I would charge a small extra fee ($5-$7) for picking him up or tell him that you are unable to pick his dog up

I charge $5 for dropoff or pickup service, in addition to my regular boarding fee. I limit that service to 5 miles from my house. I agree with Denise in that you should charge him something or tell him you can't do it. My time is worth a lot, not to mention the wear and tear on your vehicle. So it also depends on how far you have to go.

I agree with the previous answers. Both Pick Up and Drop Off services are worth an additional fee or you may choose not to offer.

Also, you should charge an additional fee based on the stay lasting more than 24 hours (your nightly fee) since the stay begins Tuesday morning and ends Wednesday evening, you're completely justified in charging a daycare (if not a second nightly) fee. This is best handled before you book it and edit the quote as needed.

Agree with the previous answers. I would charge. Explain that you will simply charge enough to cover the cost of gas during morning rush-hour traffic.

$5 P/U or D/O. Circumstances that I do not charge: transferring from another sitter (dog & sitter were not a good match and I had cared for the dog before, she was trying to find a back-up). When it is more convenient for me (maybe I have somewhere I have to be at P/U or have another dog arriving before P/U causing too much overlap of dogs I'll bring home my regular daycare doggies early)
