Pint-sized pups with small children? You may have been told that’s not the best idea—that little dogs can be feisty and snappy. But, there are plenty of smaller breeds that really do make wonderful additions to the family.

Boasting patient, mellow, and super-sweet personalities, these small breeds are our top, tiny picks for families with kids.

This friendly, curious breed is known for a gentle and even temper that pairs well with children. Though they’ll want to spend all of their time with the family at home, don’t bank on them as a security system – they’re a little too friendly to make competent guard dogs.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Want some help herding the kids in for dinner? Corgis are happy to oblige considering they love nothing more than following their loved ones around. Affectionate, sweet, and wicked smart, these canines are programmed to please, so begin training them early on.

Shih Tzu

Sweet and friendly, this little breed has a big heart and a big sense of loyalty. Show your kids how to nicely play with this pup, and they’ll have a buddy forever. Shih Tzus are also sturdy – meaning they can keep up with any active, chaotic household. Just make sure you keep up with the grooming!

Pomeranian

Intelligent and loving, Pomeranians make ideal family pets so long as kids learn to be gentle with their little frames. And for their own happiness (and yours!) make sure to train them to spend some time alone – they’re prone to separation anxiety otherwise.

Boston Terrier

This breed has boundless energy and snuggles to offer a family, plus patience and intelligence that makes them easy to train. Kids will adore their sociable nature, and who can resist that adorable mug?

Pugs

Perfectly playful and sweet, Pugs are known for their child-friendliness. They’re also fairly low maintenance: they don’t require a ton of exercise, and pug coats are short and easy to groom. A sociable nature means they bond with lots of people and easily adapt to situations. Yay for pugs!

Havanese

This breed is social and won’t do well if left alone for extended periods of time – so the bigger, more bustling the family, the better! Havanese are affectionate, easy to train, and their coats don’t shed much, making them better for those who are allergic to dog hair.

Maltese

They’re so tiny, typically weighting just 1.3 to 3.2kg (3 to 7 pounds)! But despite being diminutive, they have big personalities and a gentle, loving nature that jives well with family life. Just make sure all kids are taught how to safely hold these little guys, especially when they’re puppies.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Hopelessly devoted to their family, the Cavalier is a trustworthy companion for kids. They love playing games and frolicking, but also will enjoy a cuddly nap in your lap. Little ones will adore stroking their long, silky coats – just make sure they’re gentle.

Bichon Frise

Extra-active kids? This just might be the dog for you! Bichon pups are endlessly cheerful, and also require regular exercise to burn off energy (sound like someone else you know?). Just make sure your garden is securely fenced, as these lovable little cotton balls can be quite the escape artists.

Of course any dog, regardless of breed, should be properly trained and socialised to be around children, just like kids should learn how to properly handle pups. That’s the ticket to family harmony for humans and furry members alike.
