Adding a new dog to your family comes with so many responsibilities, you might be feeling overwhelmed. Even if this isn’t your first puppy rodeo, it’s astonishing how much eating and pooping is required to grow a puppy into a healthy adult dog.
If puppy poo anxiety has taken hold, we’ve got some great potty tips for you.
How often should I expect my puppy to poop?
- Dogs generally poop 1-5 times per day
- Puppies tend to poop more frequently the younger they are
- Volume of poop varies greatly with the amount of fibre in the diet
- As long as the stool is of a good consistency, there really isn’t a “too much”
When does my puppy need to go?
- The first thing in the morning and the last thing you do with your new puppy each night should be going out for a toilet break.
- The best time to ask a puppy to go pee or poop is after a meal, nap, or play session.
- A puppy can “hold it” about an hour per month of age up to 8 months. Be kind and realistic with your individual dog.
- Associate a word or phrase with bathroom activities. Reward positively when your word and your puppy’s ‘deed’ coincide.
- Take your pup to the same area when you potty train. Routine is key to building good habits.
