1. Delicious Buckwheat Flour Pancake Recipe

Buckwheat flour is a great alternative to wheat flour; it’s rich in vitamins, low in calories, and it’s gluten-free, so it’s great for pooches with sensitive stomachs. The following recipe is for a savoury pancake that will have your dog drooling, but you can swap out the spinach and the cottage cheese for something sweeter like blueberries, strawberries or raspberries – whatever your dog prefers!

Ingredients

To make the pancakes:

  • 200 g (7 oz) buckwheat flour
  • 500 ml (17 fl oz) milk
  • 2 medium-sized eggs
  • 1 tsp vegetable oil

For the filling:

  • 100 g (4 oz) cottage cheese
  • 100 g (4 oz) spinach leaves

Alternative fillings:

  • 100g blueberries / strawberries / raspberries

Equipment

  • 1 x weighing scales
  • 3 x small/medium mixing bowls
  • 1 x whisk
  • 1 x frying pan
  • 1 x spatula
  • 1 x kitchen chef’s knife
  • 1 x chopping board

Method

  1. Measure out the flour, then pour into your mixing bowl; you don’t need to sieve buckwheat as it’s usually a very fine textured flour!
  2. In your second mixing bowl, whisk up the two eggs and whisk in the milk. Using a spatula or wooden spoon, lightly push the flour to the sides of the bowl to make a small well in the centre. Pour in the milk and beaten eggs into the well. Whisk together by hand until the mixture is well blended and smooth, then place the bowl into the fridge for 15 minutes.
  3. While the batter mixture is resting you can prepare the fillings. Chop or blend your spinach, then measure out the cottage cheese and stir together in a small mixing bowl.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan, then pour enough batter into the pan to coat the bottom. Cook for about 30 seconds, then flip the pancake over and cook for a further minute or so.
  5. Spoon out the cottage cheese and spinach mixture and spread in the centre of the pancake. Roll up the pancake while it’s in the pan so the filling heats up. Cut into chunks to serve.

2. Dog-friendly Potato Pancake Recipe

Here’s another lip-smacking savoury pancake recipe that your dog will love! Maybe your pooch has more of a savoury tooth than sweet? These yummy pancakes are something a little different from the norm. An indulgent treat, they contain butter and milk, so remember to give these in moderation especially if your dog’s on a diet. This recipe makes a batch of about twenty 9 cm pancakes.

Ingredients

  • 3 medium potatoes
  • Salt
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 x medium eggs
  • 2 x tablespoons butter
  • Sour cream or cottage cheese

Equipment

  • 3 x small/medium mixing bowls
  • 1 x medium saucepan
  • 1 x potato masher
  • 1 x whisk
  • 1 x wooden spoon
  • 1 x spatula

Method

  1. Boil potatoes with their skins in lightly salted water for about 30 minutes or until soft enough to prick easily with a fork.
  2. Take off the heat, drain the water and then mash the potatoes.
  3. Using two small bowls, separate the egg yolks from the whites, putting the whites to one side for the moment.
  4. Mix in the egg yolks and milk with the mashed potatoes until smooth.
  5. Beat egg whites with a whisk until stiff and fold into mashed potatoes.
  6. Melt half of the butter in a frying pan. When hot spoon a large serving spoon portion of the mashed potato mix into the pan. Flatten slightly with spatula and allow to brown well on both sides.
  7. Continue until all of the mixture is cooked adding butter as needed to avoid the potato pancakes sticking. Serve with sour cream or cottage cheese.

3. Dog-friendly Banana Pancake Recipe

These tasty treats are a healthier option and if you’re feeling peckish, why not share them with your pooch? The ingredients used here are inspired by a Paleo diet (only using ingredients that would have been available in pre-modern times!) so there’s less nasty sugar and fat to worry about. It’s also a great recipe to use up any slightly ripe bananas you might have lying around the house. Try topping these yummy pancakes with softly baked pears for a fruity finish.

Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you’ll need to get your paws on in order to cook up this chop-smacking recipe:

For the pancakes:

  • 2 x bananas
  • 2 x medium eggs
  • 1 x dash of cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp. coconut flour
  • A little coconut oil

For the topping:

  • 2 x pears

Equipment

  • 1 x medium mixing bowl
  • 1 x wooden spoon
  • 1 x non-stick frying pan or griddle pan
  • 1 x chopping board
  • 1 x kitchen knife
  • 1 x oven baking dish

Method

  1. Dice up your pears, add to your oven-proof dish and bake at 200 degrees C (180 fan oven) for about 20 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, smash up the banana and eggs. You can use a food processor if you like a smoother texture, but doing this by hand works just as well, especially if the bananas are ripe!
  3. Stir in cinnamon and coconut flour. Allow batter to sit for 2 – 3 minutes while the coconut flour rehydrates.
  4. Heat a nonstick pan or griddle and liberally baste with coconut oil.
  5. Scoop generous spoonfuls of batter onto the pan. Wait until bubbles appear in the centre.
  6. Carefully flip the pancakes. Cook on this side until golden brown.
  7. Serve up with your soft baked pears and enjoy!

4. Dog-friendly Valentine’s Day Sweet Pooch Pancake Recipe

With Valentine’s Day coinciding in the same week with Pancake Day this year, this is the perfect recipe for any dog lover who wants to show their dog just how much they care. This lightly spiced and sweet batter mixture, topped with lashings of soft fruit and yoghurt is sure to have your dog drooling.

Ingredients

  • 2 x large eggs
  • 1 x cup milk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter, melted, or vegetable oil
  • 1 x tablespoon honey
  • 1 x cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 x teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Cooking spray
  • 2 x cups sliced banana, berries and mango
  • 1 x cup plain yogurt

Equipment

  • 1 x non-stick frying or griddle pan
  • 1 x medium mixing bowl
  • 1 x whisk
  • 1 x spatula
  • 1 x sieve

Method

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, butter and honey.
  2. Sieve the dry ingredients – both flours with the baking powder and cinnamon – gently mixing into the wet mixture as you do.
  3. Heat a griddle or large non-stick frying pan over medium heat.
  4. When the pan is hot, spray the griddle with cooking spray. Add 2 tablespoons of batter for each pancake onto the greased griddle. Cook until bubbles begin to form and break in the batter.
  5. For extra presentation points, see if you can create heart shapes with the batter to show your dog you really love them.
  6. Press a few pieces of fruit into each pancake, then flip and cook until brown on the bottom, about 2 minutes.
  7. To serve, add a few dollops of yogurt and top with the remaining fruit.

5. Dog-friendly Buttermilk and Peanut Butter Dog Pancakes with Fresh Strawberries

Another gluten-free recipe here for doggies with intolerances, this peanutty and creamy pancake is a delicious way to give your dog a tasty treat this Pancake Day. Cook this up and we guarantee your pooch will be watching your every move in the kitchen! For extra creative flair, grab a dog bone cookie cutter to shape your pancakes – who said that the dog’s dinner doesn’t have to be well presented!

Ingredients

For the pancakes:

  • 1 medium egg
  • ½ cup + 2 tablespoons (160 g) buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoon all-natural peanut butter (unsalted)
  • ½ cup (70 g) buckwheat flour
  • 2 tablespoons (20 g) quick-cook polenta
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 2-3 tablespoons water
  • Oil for cooking
  • For the peanut butter drizzle
  • 2 x tablespoons of peanut butter
  • 1 x tablespoon of warm water

For the topping

  • 150g strawberries washed and chopped

Equipment

  • 1 x medium bowl
  • 1 x non-stick frying pan or griddle
  • 1 x dog bone cookie cutter (if you happen to have one!)
  • 1 x sieve

Method

  1. In a medium bowl, beat the egg. Mix in the buttermilk and peanut butter. Mix in the buckwheat flour, polenta and baking powder. The batter should be thick, but be able to drizzle off a spoon very slowly.
  2. If the consistency of your batter looks too thick, add small amounts of water a spoonful at a time. Let sit for 10 minutes.
  3. Heat a griddle to a medium heat. Add oil to the griddle and add the batter. If you happen to have a dog bone cookie cutter handy, pour the batter into the cookie cutter and spread to the edges using a spoon.
  4. Cook for around 2 minutes, until the underside is golden brown. Flip and cook for an additional minute, until both sides are golden brown.
  5. To make the peanut butter drizzle, mix 2 tablespoons of peanut butter with 1 tablespoon of water. Depending on your choice of peanut butter, you may need to slightly adjust the amount of water to get a runny consistency. To serve, drizzle the pancakes with peanut butter and fresh strawberries.
