- Not a substitute for professional veterinary help.
Maybe. If your dog has eaten pork fat, he hasn’t put himself in any real danger. Left to their own devices in the wild, dogs would eat the fat of the animals they hunt. But we humans mostly feed our dogs manufactured pet food, so added fats go beyond what your dog should be eating. Vets recommend you do not feed your dog cooked animal fats. And some worry about trichinosis in raw pork.
The Bottom Line
Giving your dog an occasional bite of fatty bacon will only brighten his day. (And we do mean one bite, very occasionally. Bacon contains a lot of salt and fat.) But otherwise don’t add pork fat to your dog’s diet. There are a number of healthy fats with nutritional benefits that your dog will enjoy, including fish oil, coconut oil, and olive oil.
