Can Dogs Eat Avocado?

  • Not a substitute for professional veterinary help.

Maybe, but you’ll need to make sure the stone and peel are removed first. Dogs are omnivores, and they benefit from many different fruits and vegetables for the same reasons humans do: these foods are low in fat and sugar, and high in vitamins and fibre. Avocado boasts healthy fat that contributes to a shiny coat, and is a popular ingredient in some dog foods and treats. However, it isn’t ideal to serve to your dog in plain form. The fruit itself isn’t toxic, but the skin and leaves are poisonous for dogs. Also, the large pit presents a choking hazard.

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 avocado, peeled and pit removed
  • 100g oat flour (pulverise oats in a food processor or blender)
  • 2 eggs

You may need to add some additional flour depending on the size of your avocado, so keep some extra on hand.

Instructions

Preheat oven to 180ºC

  • Slice your peeled and pitted avocado into the bowl of a food processor.
  • Add the oat flour and pulse to combine.
  • Add the eggs and pulse to combine.
  • Add more flour as necessary to get a workable dough.

Turn out onto a surface lined with baking paper and roll to an even 0.5cm (1/4 inch) thickness.

Cut out and place on a baking tray lined with grease-proof paper.

Bake for 20-25 minutes or until just browned around the edges.

You can turn off the oven and leave the biscuits inside to cool slowly, creating a crunchier dog treat.
