Cocker spaniels are named for their original job—flushing woodcock birds out of low brush for hunters. Cockers are the smallest of the dogs in the AKC Sporting group and are closely related to springer spaniels.
That being said, cockers are one of the sweetest, warmest family dogs around, and are known more these days for being gentle family companions with a soft mouth. This is a trait most bird dogs share (think Labradors, poodles, and setters). In fact, cockers are so friendly they have absolutely zero talent as guard dogs. They just love everybody!
