marked best answer | What to do when a dog is being aggressive with me? I am currently sitting a family of three dogs, all was fine the first two days. Now one of the males is attacking his siblings. I attempted to corral him in a playpen but he climbed right out. I then moved him to a crate where he spent 1 hour screaming and clawing to get out. I went to use the restroom and in two minutes he destroyed my crate, got loose and urinated on every piece of furniture in my living/sitting room. Aside from that, he is now aggressive towards me, and challenges me every chance he gets. He has bitten me once already. I sent a message to the owners asking for suggestions but have yet to hear back. Had anyone else had a dog that turned aggressive towards them. If they can't offer some suggestions that work, would I be justified asking them to find someone to come and get him? He's in my last crate, if he destroys that, I don't know what I'll do with him as he marks EVERYWHERE. They are here until the 3rd!!! |
answered a question | Why does my dog eat human poop? Some veterinary nutritionists have suggested that dogs eat stool to replenish enzymes so that they are better prepared to digest their food. There is also evidence that dogs that aren't getting enough of certain nutrients will resort to eating stool. A lack of vitamin B is often said to be a cause of coprophagia (stool eating) That being said, human stool does have some terrible bacteria and has the very real potential to cause some serious gastrointestinal problems. Make sure you are providing your dog a diet specifically formulated for dogs and for God sakes DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG THE OPPORTUNITY TO EAT HUMAN STOOL. How does that happen?!? Dogs are dogs. They will, for the most part, eat anything. YOU as a pet owner are responsible for keeping your dog safe and healthy, therefore it is your responsibility to make sure your dog does not have access to human stool. |
answered a question | Why does my dog not like black people? A dog may react in fear-based aggression to a person of color for two reasons: 1. Insufficient positive associations in early socialization to people of all races 2. A traumatic incident with a person of color that has now generalized to all people of color. |
answered a question | Why does my dog lick the wall? It could be a sign of obsessive compulsive disorder, stress or boredom. "Wall licking" can also be caused by a neurological problem, a condition such as Cushing's disease, seizures or liver failure. Medication or behavioral therapy can be used to alleviate symptoms. |
answered a question | Why does my older dog pee so much? Frequent urination in dogs sometimes signals a health problem. Increases in frequency can indicate a bladder problem, bladder infection, kidney disease, bladder disease, liver disease or diabetes. Your vet should run a urinalysis for a diagnosis. |
answered a question | Why does my dog scratch her ears all the time? Do you clean them regularly? My dog suffers horrible ear infections and that's my first clue he's flaring up, he starts scratching his ears and shaking his head. |
answered a question | Can I give my dog pepto bismol for diarrhea? I agree, human medications do not often work the same way in dogs as they do for us. I second plain white rice, it helps to bind things up. You can also try plain canned pumpkin, make sure it is plain and not pie filling. If those don't help I would recommend a visit to the vet. |
answered a question | Is my dog gay? No your dog is not "gay". Dogs will often mount other dogs as a way of showing dominance over another dog. Even female dogs will "mount" other dogs in this way. |

answered a question | What can I give my dog for constipation? Canned pumpkin is fantastic for both constipation and diarrhea. Make sure to get PLAIN pumpkin only, not the pie filling. Also some Coconut oil on her food will help. |

answered a question | My dog is afraid of me, what should I do? Without knowing more about the dogs history it is hard to say why, but in time you can lessen your dogs fear. First off, don't force the dog. Try sitting on the floor so you seem less threatening. Avoid eye contact and maybe have a few tasty treats. If the dog keeps his/her distance you can quietly toss the treats in their direction. Use a soft voice and avoid making any sudden movements. It can take time but if you are consistent you should be able to help your dog overcome his/her fear. |
answered a question | Why is my dog so hyper? First off, is your dog getting any/enough exercise. A couple long walks or a few good games of fetch can go a long way towards tiring a dog out and drain that excess energy. A dog that sits around all day with no exercise has no outlet for their pent up energy. |
answered a question | What do pugs eat? Pugs can eat anything you can feed any other breed of dog, assuming your pug doesn't have any specific food allergies any commercial dog food is suitable. Check before feeding any human food to your dog as some are toxic. Carrots, green beans, sweet potatos and red/black beans are fine for dogs. Again, assuming your dog isn't allergic. |
answered a question | Can I use tea tree oil on my dog? tea tree oil is safe for dogs and cats and effective only when it is diluted correctly – i.e., diluted in large amounts of water. The recommended ratio is 0.1-1.0 percent strength, to be dispensed topically. Oral application is not safe for your pet. |

answered a question | Dog appears to have mange, how to proceed?? i would be concerned about sarcoptic mange, which is transmittable to other animals as well as humans. On the other hand it could aslo be demodectic mange which is not transmittable. I have owned several dogs with demodex, it is something they are born with, they can be symptom free (no hair loss) and then something stresses them out and BOOM--hair loss and scratching. My current dog is highly allergic to grass and pollen and exhibits the same symptoms you are describing. I personally would flat out ask what is going on, considering you have other animals. I hope it is anything but sarcoptic mange. I would certainly not let him in contact with other animals, no sharing toys, beds, bowls. And wear gloves or handle as little as possible and wash wash wash your hands. At least until you find out what the problem is. I am sorry you have to deal with that. |

answered a question | Holiday gifts ideas for your recurring clients? Last year for one of my regular clients (I won't lie, they are my favorite. Perfectly behaved and to die for owners) I did an entire scrapbook for them for Christmas. I used all the best photos I took throughout the year, the last one with them dressed as santa. I glued a dog collar around it to "clip" it closed and got a dog tag engraved with their names for the front. It was so darn cute I wanted to keep it honestly lol Needless to say they loved it! For the semi-regulars I did a great framed photo and a few small treats and toys. |

answered a question | why are we not allowed inside sitter's house? No no no, that is not standard practice. I can't speculate as to the reasons why you would not be invited in but I would be questioning that as well. I do meet and greets in my home. As a Sitter and owner of a not too people friendly dog,( he takes time to warm up to people, thankfully is great with other animals) it is a huge ordeal to have visitors in my home, but I explain him ahead of time and we manage. I would never ask someone to leave their pet without a home visit first, and if they don't ask, I offer. I'd ask..."Booboo has stayed with you x amount of times and I've never even been inside, can I see where he has all this fun without me?" haha. But seriously, I would want to see. If they decline....may be time to look for a new sitter. |

answered a question | When will my rat terrier puppy lose his fluffy coat? In general Rat Terriers are smooth coated breeds, so you can probably expect that "puppy coat" to turn into a sleek smooth coat. I have seen a few retain that "puppy fluff" though. As for the ears, some never stand up erect, but if yours do, they should be up by the time your pup reaches 10 months of age. |
answered a question | Are animals racist? I would say it depends on the dog and their experiences. I acquired an 8 week old Rotty puppy, her previous owner was a black family. From the first day I had her she did not like any black person. I took her to petco when she was six months old when a black police officer attempted to get in line behind us...it didn't go well and the officer actually drew her weapon. (No shots fired) At 12 weeks she went after a black kid in the Wendy's drive through window. So my answer, is not that they are necessarily racist, but bad experiences can affect their behavior. |
