I let my guest dogs sleep in my bed, is this something i should rethink?

Not all my visitors are allowed on furniture or beds, but when its ok I allow them to sleep with me is that bad or good?

I do what ever it takes to get a good nights sleep. If a pups is happy in a dog bed, on the couch, or in a create then so be it. BUT if they a crying and barking then they usually end up in bed with me.

I've definitely spent the night on the couch with dogs who had trouble settling down and wouldn't let me sleep. It's not ideal for me, but usually after a night or two they get used to it and I can sleep in my own bed.

I don't allow dogs in my bed at all (due to allergies, not philosophy), but I do allow dogs on the couch. I always ask at the M&G if their dogs are allowed on the furniture at home and whether or not they want them allowed on the furniture at my house. Sometimes owners are fine with dogs on their own furniture, but don't want them to get the idea it's fine to be on the furniture anywhere, so they'll ask that I not let them on the couch. Conversely, some people don't allow their dogs on the furniture at home, but they're fine with me allowing it if I want.

It all depends on what their owners allow. I always ask at the M&G where the dog sleeps at home. If he's allowed on the owner's bed, then he's allowed on mine (although I discourage it). If he has a bed or other location at home, that's where he sleeps at my house.

I read years ago when I got my first puppy that professional trainers discourage allowing the dog to sleep in the bed with you. You want to establish yourself as the alpha dog, and allowing the dog into your bed sends the signal that you are equals. Something about the pack mentality - sharing a bed = friends, packmates.

I ask at the meet and greet where they sleep at home. We don't mind a small dog in bed with us. We used to let our own dogs sleep with us if they wanted. I don't worry about pack mentality with a small dog
