What do I do if a room mate is home while house sitting and the apartment is messy?

I'm currently doing my first house-sitting and I did not realize the room mate would be home. I am a female and the room mate is male so I'm not super comfortable with this situation. On top of that, the owner did not leave me clean sheets or towels, and did not clean up the apartment before my stay. What would you do in this situation? Is it irresponsible to take the dog to my apartment to watch her?

Rover would encourage you to be transparent in all your communications. You need to have some dialogue with the client before you take the dog to your home. Since they booked you for housesitting, they may not want the dog transported to a different neighborhood and home for a variety of reasons. However, they might agree to it if given the opportunity to I have a conversation about it in advance.

In the future, You will want to add things like this to your questions during the meet & greet. Will anyone else be in the home, either staying over or for any other reason? Where will I be staying? May I see that area?

Since these are items that were not discussed during the meet & greet, you can nicely message them and let them know that you weren’t aware of the situation. So, you would like to know if they’re comfortable with you taking the dog to your home. You can also give the client another option/suggestion such as offering to walk and feed the dog in its own home & neighborhood (and clearly present your best estimate of hours - overnight or possibly during some part of day- you’ll go back and forth between your home and theirs so their dog can remain comfortably in its home, or ask if they have any thoughts.

That's kinda terrible the owner "FORGOT" to mention his male roommate will be home while you are staying there. I am sorry you are in this situation, You should text or call him immediately and ask why he didn't disclose such an important information. Also, is the roommate ok with YOU being there? Do you know who he is? Do you even know his name? I wonder if the roommate was notified you'd be there?

NEVER ever take the dog home without consulting with the owner first. The owner booked a house sitting because he did not want the dog to go elsewhere. C Call him immediately and discuss.

Did you not ask where are you going to sleep, what bedding and towels to use? If this wasn't discussed, then he is expecting you to bring your own.

Be safe. Call the owner now. Good luck!!! :)

It can be uncomfortable to be in a new living situation with someone you don't know, especially if they're of a different gender. It's important to prioritize your safety and comfort, so if you feel uncomfortable staying in the apartment with the male roommate, it's okay to reach out to the pet owner and explain the situation. See if there's an alternative living arrangement or if they can make alternate arrangements for their roommate to be out of the apartment during your stay.

Regarding the cleanliness of the apartment and the lack of clean sheets and towels, you should also reach out to the pet owner and let them know the situation. It's important to have a clean and comfortable living environment while house sitting, and the pet owner should be responsible for providing that for you.

As for taking the dog to your apartment, it's generally not a good idea to take a pet out of the owner's home without their permission. Plus, you'd need to consider whether your apartment is pet-friendly and if you're able to provide the same level of care for the pet that the owner expects.

In summary, communicate your concerns with the pet owner and see if there are any alternate arrangements that can be made. Prioritize your safety and comfort, and try to work with the owner to ensure a clean and comfortable living environment while house sitting.
