What to do with an abandoned dog?

A strange man brought over his pit bull mix and scheduled him for a three week stay. I think the dog has been abandoned because the owner has not responded in 8 days. He also did not pay through the app. I think he was looking for a free place for the dog to stay. I can not keep the dog because he is destroying my house and broke a large living room window as well as chewing up everything.

Has anyone had to call animal control to pick up an animal? I wonder if this is part of a scam where they leave the animal for months and if you take the animal to animal control they sue you for property loss. No local fosters will take the dog.

I don't do anything without having them pay thru the Rover app. It protects me from these kinds of issues. If he abandoned the dog, which I suspect he did, he would Never have paid for Rover in the first place. Especially not for a 3 week stay. And You would not be dealing with this issue.

How did a stranger end up at your house with a dog booking a stay with you? Did you invite him? And he gave you a dog and left without paying? I don't understand how this can happen.

Unless you met him on Rover, and you gave him your home address without verifying who he was? You invited him in? Did he give you a copy of his ID? Do you know his name? You didn't ask for a payment?

Have you called his cell or his home or his work? Did he give you his emergency contact?

You have to call animal control but be very careful if you do not even know who he is, since you're saying he is a stranger! Next time please do NOT invite strangers into your home! Safety first!!!! Good luck to you!

He came over through Rover. Have you ever had a meet and greet before? He is really scary and I'm terrified of him!!

Oh if he came over through Rover, call rover immediately!

IF no payment happened through the rover platform (website, app., or phone), then it was Not booked. If that’s the case, you can call animal control for your city/county. You can look up online or contact through the nonemergency police number. If this is an abandoned pet, there are ordinances/regulations/laws that apply, which detail defining abandonment, specify details about reforming, and collecting some compensation.

Thank you so much, I plan to do that. I think this guy might retaliate since he knows where I live and could vandalize me for turning in the dog. But I have no other choice.

Whether or not you contact animal control directly or through the non-emergency local police number, be sure to clearly tell the police your concerns re. possible retaliation. Surely, this isn’t the first time the PD has addressed that type of concern and they may even know who this guy is.

Since she says he came over through Rover, then she needs to call Rover.

Came through rover/brought over pit bull mix, But “He also did not pay through the app.“. The way I read this: the guy found sitter through Rover but never booked it properly. Understandably, if it wasn’t booked through Rover, they are not going to be very helpful.

Thanks Deb. I just didn't understand correctly :D So a stranger dropped off a dog, didn't pay and just left, is that what's happening here? SCARY! Never take in a dog without going through rover or without a payment and some ID!
