Are house sitters background checked?
Is it safe to let a sitter to your house? What is my reassurance that they are trustworthy?

All sitters are backgrounded checked before the profile is approved. Another good check is reviews - lots of positive reviews is a good sign! Always schedule a meet and greet before booking anything!
Rover does have a general background check done on all sitters and walkers. But you should familiarize yourself with Rover's position relative to your home and pet:
