California Service fee increase to 25%?

Does anyone in California , know why our service fee to Rover is being increased to 25% ( per the email we received)?

It's a bit confusing as part of the example shows it is 20% and the paragraph below the example says 25% service fee will be added to the rate for each night. Is that just a type'O?

That make a difference to the cost to our customers, and I don't get why it is only on CA.

I emailed support, but typically do not get answers for days or longer.

It's not allowing my answer to appear. I added to previous thread. https://support.rover.com/hc/en-us/articles/12439190554132-Fees-and-rates-in-California states it's for "legal reasons". Under Fees, shows 25 % twice!

Thx! :) I just figured it out the numbers, after seeing a different comment. But still have no clue what the legal specific reason is. The email was very vague.

Yes, Very vague. Support emailed back an answer which confirmed 25% will apply to all customers in California (which is a big change to those who have been customers so many years that they paid 0 zero in extra service fees & longtime sitters who kept 85% (rover 15%).

never got a reply back..BUT, the rate for customers will be the same, they are just wording it different (more accurate). E.g. My rates are 55 a night for customers ( so that I would get 44 a night after the service fee of 11.00 deducted. Now, the 25% fee is charged on my base rate of 44, & is 11

So basically we are paying the same in fees.. as my service fee is 11.00. It has something to do with the wording, and not sure why. But we in CA have always paid the 20% off the total, so now its just worded as 25% on what we take home ( after the service fee). Hope that makes sense. :)

Actually, for sitters who started with rover before March 2016, rover kept 15% (sitters rec’d 85%) and customers who opened rover account prior to Sept 2016 were Not charged any service fees. For Californians who had accounts 7-8+ years, this is a Huge change.

Hello: My concern is not only the increase service fee from 20 to 25%, but that the total rate with the fee shows up for the customer to see it. Meaning, the customer can think that the pet sitter increased the rate and also are we going to get charged for the total rate cost for tax purposes later?

Yes. Customers would think that the pet sitter increase the rate substantially. And 25% is a really hefty amount, especially for those who were used to 15%. For tax purposes, there shouldn’t be any issue. Taxes will be based on the amount that sitters are paid.

Re. Sitter Service fees vary depending on when your Rover profile was approved. Profile approval date Service fee per booking

  • Before March 1, 2016 15%
  • On/After March 1, 2016 20%

Beginning in September 2015, bookings by NEW account holders are charged a Owner Service fee to support Rover’s operating costs, and cover state and local taxes, where applicable. (Pet owners with rover accounts created before Sept 2015 were not charged this),
