Is there really a character limit on comments?

Whenever I go to add a comment (not an answer) to these Rover boards, it says there is a character limit, but when I reach the limit, it just puts a negative number there and still allows me to post the full comment. Can people see the entire comment? Is that a recommended character limit?

There's a limit, but it's way after where it starts going into the negatives. It shows the entire comment as you enter it, and if you hit the real limit, it will actually cut you off to where you are no longer able to enter text. I think the true limit is 500 characters or something.
