The owner left me a bad review for not mopping their floor. Are household cleaning duties part of our job?

Long complicated story that I won't get into, but I watched two incredibly hyper untrained dogs, when they went from outside to inside they tracked in some dirt and I noticed the floors started getting dirty. There was no towel/rag/etc. left by the owners to wipe paws and even if there was the dogs were both INCREDIBLY hyper and would not have even stayed still for me to do so. Additionally, I was primarily focused on the fact that the puppy was not potty trained, peeing and pooping everywhere, and had an accident in his kennel the last night that required a bath (which I happily did with my own supplies). I just got a review from the owners saying they were upset that the floors were so dirty (mind you they are currently renovating their home, there was no mop to be seen and only a dirty towel on the outside of the door). Basically - are we responsible for general household cleaning duties not caused by us or by potty accidents, especially with our own supplies? We are dog sitters, not a maid service.

I think you know the answer. We are not a maid service. However I would add that when staying in someone else’s home try to leave it in as good condition as it was when you entered. Realistically, often doing a bit more than required is the usual norm. Of course, you know this because you bathed the dog without charging and cleaned up the accidents. Even for unfair reviews, the guidance from Rover is usually to not comment, to prevent it from escalating. By not addressing it, it won’t necessarily stand out more than other better reviews.

Instead of attaching a response which will highlight whatever review was written, you could personally message her through the past stay area and let her know that you didn’t see a mop or clean towels anywhere, but did your best to provide the care her dogs needed and keeping it tidy, which included cleaning up accidents and a comp. bath. If you really feel like you have to say something, keep it short along the lines of glad you took care of their dogs while away. Sorry if they were not satisfied. (Do not say anything negative about the dogs)

You top reviews are good and even that client’s really isn’t damaging. She acknowledges that you stayed later than required because she was late returning (which not all sitters would) and you took care of dogs and sent updates. Re. Her comment that it took a whole box of swiffer wipes to clean her floor, If I was looking to book a sitter and read that I comment, I wouldn’t pay any attention to it. I’ve used swiffers is in my home, other peoples homes, and other places, it never takes a whole box. I would think either that the person was exaggerating or her home is surrounded by mud & lacks door mats / not finished entry way points.

For the $29 you charge per night? I don't know if you charge a la carte for the drop-ins you perform during the day, but as long as you didn't mess up their house, it is crazy to think you should clean it as well. Where I live, cleaning ladies charge that per hour.

The review they left for you doesn't sound bad at all. They were happy with your service and even pointed out you went above and beyond while waiting for them to return and they really enjoyed their honeymoon. Your response to their review is making you look kinda argumentative and if I were you I wouldn't write such a response for al potential future clients to see. You should have thank them for their their review and just leave it .
