How to deal with missing a dog when it returns to its owner?

I have a couple dogs I've sat who I am very closely bonded with, including a golden I just recently sat. He was the biggest love and cuddle bug and I miss him so much and I told the owner when she came to pick him up how much we loved him and she said we are for sure her new sitters because this was the first time she really felt like he was loved and she did not worry once when she was away. However, I assume she wont need care that often and I already miss him. Is it crossing a line to text her and tell her how much we already miss him & check in on him? She said we are welcomed to him anytime since we live so close, but I dont know if she was just saying that because we loved him or if she meant it. Anybody struggle with this in the past?

Personal care industry where you’re taking care of someone’s furry family member, sometimes clients become friends. Although I recommend always acting professionally (aligned with their standards), that line can be blurred. It’s fine and normal to communicate that you miss a favorite dog. You could offer to join them in their neighborhood when they take walks. You could also offer them a special deal. For example, offer daycare at a reduced rate, for specific dates when your calendar is empty ( enter cost adjustment with - negative amount to do so).

I wouldn’t suggest wording it as checking in on him. That could get misunderstood in a negative way.

My advice is, don’t get too attached. You’ve gotta look at this as a professional business. You’re gonna have attachments you’re gonna feel some kind of way. Have favorite pets. And usually yes if somebody prefers you, they will use you again. That is how it goes, and people are very consistent with wanting the same sitter again most of the time. You probably will get booked again. So when it comes to communicating with people that you’ve worked with you communicate before the job during the job and then say your goodbyes, and you don’t contact them again until they contact you. That’s the professional nature of the job in general. if you wanted some advice on that aspect. I have done a lot of jobs on Rover and I do it as my only job and this is the pattern that I follow to get clients. I’m sure that she really did enjoy you and like you and probably will contact you when they need another vacation. Don’t contact them except for above advice maybe a hello at holidays hope your well.

Anyone who loves animals will, at times, get attached. It is normal. You can always text to check on a pet. Just be sure to stay professional. I send client a thank you card with my nfo on it as a reminder that I caee about their dogs and hope to see them again soon.
