Should I charge for a dog walk, if I am sitting overnight?

I have stayed a few times and just charged for the overnight service, but always take the dogs out for a walk because it seems like the right thing to do, but I’m wondering if that service should be charged for along with the overnight fee. Your opinions would be appreciated. Thank you. Alison

The service you are providing is billed as house sitting. There is no "overnight" service listed. If you read the FAQ which describes what the various services are, you will see that house sitting is described as a sitter staying in a home for up to 24 hours of pet care, the same as boarding, another all-inclusive service, in which a pet owner would expect the sitter to feed, walk and play with their pet. However, house sitting should be viewed as more of a premium-type service because you are required to uproot yourself and stay at someone else's home while probably being asked to take in mail and water plants. Therefore, it should command a higher rate. Now, you're not required to spend every moment there. You can go out and walk other dogs, run errands, etc., so long as you spend the majority of your time there, especially during the night.

However, house sitting is probably subject to the most interpretation here on Rover and, as an independent contractor, you can do whatever you like so long as your customers know what they're getting for your "nightly" charge. If you are going to show up at 7pm and leave at 7am, then they should know as well as if you are going to charge for additional walks or drop-ins.

There was just a question posted here a day or so ago about this subject and the sitter said that her prospective clients were surprised she was not staying in the home. If your rate isn't gong to cover that level of service, then raise it.

Agree with Karen. I firmly believe that when someone offers housesitting or boarding it should include as many walks as the dog needs for good health. In my opinion, that means every few hours, or about four walks a day.

I know there are some dogs who are trained to use indoor relief stations - I look at those as the exception.

I agree with answers above. Dog boarding and house sitting include walks at no extra charge.
