Whats everyone house sitting rate? Do you sleep over?

Whats everyone house sitting rate? I feel like the night rate should be specifically for sleeping over and the drop in visit for the day? Does anyone agree? I find people are annoyed when I express this. I feel like people think it's a daily fee rather than one vs. The other. I don't mean to be fickle but rover is my main means of income and pet parents decline because they think I'm charging too much.

Rover's guidelines state that the "nightly" house-sitting rate includes up to 24 hours of care. IMO house sitting is a premium-type service because you are not only caring for an owner's pet but also their home. There would be an expectation that you stay overnight in order to provide that level of care.

However, on Rover, sitters are independent and can provide whatever service they'd like so long as they communicate it to the client and there's agreement. Some house sitters will use the client's home as a base of operation and service other clients for walks, etc. Some will only come to the house in the evening and stay until morning because they have full-time jobs or are students, but they will also check on the pet during the day. Some will include those visits; some will charge on an a la carte basis.

As I have written, I do believe true house sitting commands a higher fee due to the greater responsibilities and the inconvenience of having to uproot yourself. However, at $100/night, a client would not only expect you to stay overnight but also to provide care throughout the day. If you are not getting house sitting jobs, then the market has spoken.

Rover guidelines loosely define house sitting as up to 24 hours of care, (but adds that pet owners and providers can agree to mutual terms), which explains why anyone who charges overnight separate from daytime services may encounter push back from clients. There are Rover sitters though who have communicated what you propose : that they have one rate for overnight and a separate rate for daytime services. As long as you discuss that prior to booking that’s fine. I think it’s a failure of transparency on Rover to make that differentiation clearer upfront during pet owner search.

Looking at it from both perspectives, I think it should be all encompassing up to 24 hours, even if that meant the daily rate reflected that amount of time. As a pet owner, I would dislike it being presented as a la carte / nickel & dime add-on.

Related to your question, another way that rover lacks transparency for pet owners is how sitters operate varies extremely differently. Some will stay with the pet during the assignment. Some will only stay with the pet some of the time during the assignment and leaving for many hours to go to other jobs/assignments/school/personal events. Hopefully, this is discussed at the meet & greet, but when the pet parent initially sees rates it’s not clear how the services provided & thus the rates differ.

House sitting rates are all over the place, some high, some low, and a lot depends on the area you service. Clients always complain about rates regardless of the service. Your rate of $100 is very high and will limit your client base. Best of luck
