What can be done about property damage?

I have had various instances of property damage in my year of providing service. I have yet to ask for reimbursement from the owner or looked into insurance. Last night a dog completely mangled our gate on our fence. It will need to be fixed ASAP and I anticipate it costing well over $100. What have you done? Do I mention it to the owner and hope they offer to pay? Do I demand payment? Do I swallow the costs myself?

I realize that this probably isn’t the answer you want to read by, I tend to think that it’s a cost of doing business. You can save the repair receipt and itemize it as an expense against your income. Some sitters have taken out insurance. Insurance is a business though - if you make claims in excess of what they want to pay, your rate may be increased or policy may be cancelled. Sometimes sitters will nicely inform owners of damages and hope for reimbursement compensation. Although some sitters have shared that they have create a contract that they have the owner sign before booking, Rovers terms state that the owner is not responsible. If you’re going to request money for reimbursement, be prepared to explain how that happened while the pet was in your custody and. possible pushback. Depending on how that conversation goes, there could be other ramifications, which may include loss of repeat client, poor review, social media/ word of mouth business reputation damage.
