what if owner leaves a dog with you and it's in Heat?

Hi there, my profile states no dogs in heat. his dog was in heat. i had to deal with that, clean, mop, etc. not what i was expecting. I never know where to go quickly when i have a question, the phone # for rover says it's emergency only. . I didn't charge extra for this. what would you do?

They way that I avoid dogs in Heat is by requiring all female dogs are Spayed. (I also require all male dogs to be neutered). Exception are puppies until they are of age. During the Meet and Greets I do verify with the owners to hopefully avoid this issue. Best of Luck!

Let me clarify the rover number first. You can call there anytime for rover bookings. There are prompts to follow whether it’s an emergency such as a dog safety your health is at risk or client or sitter question. Some of the people that answer the phone have sitter experience & can be helpful.

That’s really too bad that you had that experience with the dog in heat. Some new owners of young dogs may be unaware of heat cycles. This parallels the owners who don’t know their dog has problems not peeing/pooping inside. In those situations, I’d advise you to take steps to protect your property ( get diapers for females, possibly belly bands for males who try to mark),and contain messes to more easily cleaned hard surface floors by use of indoor gates or play pens. For future bookings, you may want to check if your profile clearly states all dogs must be spayed or neutered (I didn’t read that in yours.)

And let the owner know in a very nice way that the dog is in heat. If they don’t reply, mention again when the booking is complete & they pick up dog, that you were unprepared for that because you don’t accept bookings for dogs in heat and bought supplies (present receipts and ask if they’d reimburse).

Since my dog is a 13 year old female and was spayed when I adopted her, I have NO experience with a dog in heat. Can you tell me what the behaviors are so that I know if the current dog I'm taking care of is in heat?

I believe this sitter discovered dog wasn’t spayed when the dog was actually bleeding, similar to a menstrual period. Very messy times when doggy diapers were likely needed.
