Direct Deposit Changes?

Anyone else see Rover state they are going to switch to direct deposit through stripe rather than through paypal? This is great news ....except for one thing...they are going to require your social security number. Never have I ever had to give out my SSN for direct deposit unless it was a company I worked for which they needed for tax purposes. Since we are independent contractors there is no reason they need our SSN. I encourage you all to email rover and ask them to remove the SSN requirement and instead use the confirmation method common in such instances. I personally am not comfortable with Rover or Stripe having my SSN and neither should you.

Comments

Yes and I am Not happy about this. Not so much the SSN requirement but that I now have to get my money yet Another way…. I may drop Rover all together now. :-/

So now I have to give part of my pay to Rover AND Stripe?!?! No thx! https://support.stripe.com/questions/passing-the-stripe-fee-on-to-customers

I haven't received any notification of this change.

I agree! I hadn't thought about the SSN issue (which would give them all the info they need to actually access my bank account and God forbid there be a breach!) but I'm really mad that I can no longer get my money immediately! With PayPal I could literally have my money in my bank within minutes.

Now it could take a couple days! So let me get this straight. It's safer to provide my SSN and my bank account information AND it's more convenient to have to wait longer than a couple minutes to get my money? Does anyone see the problem with this. We give you 20% of our earnings. We should be able

Get our money the way we want! Instead of whatever is cheaper for Rover!

I believe this is about taxation and the new rules to tax the “Gig” economy. I believe Rover has no choice in this but unfortunately they will take a big hit! 1) They will lose dog sitters. 2) To cover our taxes we must go up substantially on rates leading to probably a loss in customers.

Dwight C - The change in payment processor isn't specifically to comply with taxation as Paypal has provided that information, where applicable. I expect Rover got a better deal from Stripe in terms of the fees they're charged. I've seen nothing to indicate sitters will be charged anything.

Karen R - thx for thoughts. My thoughts: 1) PayPal was working, it was easy, low maintenance. Stripe is not and it requires a complex change process. Rover will lose sitters over this. I can guarantee they lost one. Rover got me started but I can go direct now for cash and give a price cut.

Also I’m looking at the Stripe dashboard. It is NOT intuitive or user-friendly. Stripe gives me no value add. I never put my Rover earnings in my bank anyway. I use my PayPal debit card for whatever I need. I don’t believe Stripe offers those features. Now I must move money from my bank to PayPal.

I agree with Dwight 101% on all comments! They are losing this sitter as well. :-(

Dwight, no argument from me. Paypal has worked for me since its inception. I haven't looked at Stripe's platform and am not eager to change. Yet I've been forced to for other sites, like eBay, whose own managed payments system is horribly flawed and lacks basic business sense.

Quick follow-up. I used Stripe to successfully deposit funds to my bank from my available Rover balance. My experience: frustration. Stripe did nothing in its dashboard to inform me of a transfer in progress or a transfer amount. Money just showed in my bank 2 days later (4 days after stay ended).

Additionally, after searching everywhere in Stripe I still find no “paper trail” of the transaction. So my perspective I find no reason to ever go to the Stripe’s portal again other than to manage my banking account information. If I’m missing something will you all please share your thoughts? Thx.

Dwight, did Stripe charge you a fee or was the transaction amount exactly the same as your Rover balance?

Re: Fees @Karen R - no fee at all.

Thanks, Dwight, for the update. Glad to see there weren't any other fees, although like you I am not thrilled to have to deal with another payment processor. Strange though, every other use for Paypal has dropped off.

I'm also uncomfortable with having to create yet another account, and give another company all my personal info, in order to use Rover. I've wished for years that Rover would add direct deposit, but not via another untrustworthy internet company, and not at the expense of all other options.

I'm unhappy also. We don't know how safe this new company is, and they want our SSN. I don't like giving out my bank acct info, much less my SSN. Bad idea, Rover!

Y'all, it's stripe. You're talking about being business owners then learn about your different processors. It's not just some sketchy lil po'dunk thingermajig. PayPal literally has stolen honest peoples(rovers included) money in the name of fraud prevention. Seems like y'all hiding income. Afraid?

This may cause me to end my time as a sitter for Rover. It’s getting too expensive to be a sitter through Rover now.

Same!!!!!!

What added expense will there be for Stripe and do you know this for certain? Rover picks up Paypal's fees, wouldn't they do the same with Stripe?

what are good alternatives to rover? all i read in reviews is how stripe doesn't pay out consistently and accounts being locked with no reason. https://www.sitejabber.com/reviews/stripe.com

I researched stripe, After reading several hundred reviews, I will never set up with stripe, there not getting shit from me. I suggest the same. Stripe is reportedly sitting on money for weeks, not refunding, doing unauthorized withdrawals, then deleting accounts. All ofshore, no legal recourse.

This is for the 1099 that your income will be reported on for taxes. Any income over $600 starting January 1, 2022.

exactly since everyone complains about no 1099

Very unhappy! I could go on PayPal and see a list of customer payouts on PayPal. Now I get a lump sum in my bank account & when I go on Rover to see pay outs there is a list but it's in no order. I have to add this and that until I figure out who paid. NOT ACCEPTABLE!!! List payouts in order!!!

The IT geniuses at Rover need to go on PayPal, see how payments were listed and then adjust the program on Rover to follow suit. List the payments in order as they are paid so that sitters can readily see payments in the order received!!!

How did you guys get your stripe password. I got no Information. I’m not using this app anymore.

I can’t find anything about 1099 for anything over $600, but on the stripe website it states that it uses the same criteria that PayPal has used, nothing up to 20k. I also remember having to give PayPal my ss # at one point to continue using them. I would hope that rover officially answers all these questions instead of watching us answer each other about new policies with their payment methods. They certainly can afford sometime to do this for us. Not only are they taking 20% of my bookings, like a bank they have held onto over 4K of my prepaid bookings this past month and I’m sure they make interest on it (it is ultimately our money and we should be making that interest I think). But then it’s good that they get the money at the time of the booking. Then it takes two days for them to release it and two days for PayPal to release it if I wanted the free transfer. I’ve always thought zelle would be the answer but it looks like stripe will accomplish the same thing and cut two days off the process.

The law changed for this year and that $20K minimum no longer exists. It is $600 for everybody now.

Stripe adds 2 weeks to the process for some

If you are worried about fees. I quote Dwight C.

"Quick follow-up. I used Stripe to successfully deposit funds to my bank from my available Rover balance. My experience: frustration. Stripe did nothing in its dashboard to inform me of a transfer in progress or a transfer amount. Money just showed in my bank 2 days later (4 days after stay ended)." - Dwight C. on this thread

In case anyone is worried about more money being taken out.

They even looked for a paper trail. You know for record keeping.

"Additionally, after searching everywhere in Stripe I still find no “paper trail” of the transaction. So my perspective I find no reason to ever go to the Stripe’s portal again other than to manage my banking account information. If I’m missing something will you all please share your thoughts? Thx." -Dwight C.

I've seen a lot of comments about how this change to Stripe, as Rover's payment processor of choice, is somehow going to cost sitters money. Where is this stated? Rover previously contracted with Paypal to perform this function. If you ever used Paypal for other purposes (non-Rover), you would know that Paypal ihas fees for either sending or receiving money. As sitters, no fees were ever taken out of our earnings by Rover. Rover essentially paid them.

Furthermore, I can't imagine that it is legal for a company to make its payments in a way that the payee has to pay fees to obtain. There must always be a free option.

I have to assume that Stripe offered Rover a better deal than Paypal, which is why this change is occurring. Lower costs to Rover, more services and reporting capabilities. Who knows? I am not happy about having to provide my bank account and SSNs to another online company, but there's not much I can do about it.

From what I've read in Rover's more detailed FAQ, this method is more streamlined, i.e., you don't have to go in and withdraw funds from Rover and then transfer them from Paypal to your bank account. Funds will go directly from Rover through Stripe into your bank account. No manual intervention. I can recall numerous comments on this board about the problems of withdrawals, delays and even one person asking why Stripe wasn't an option.

Comments

If you read Stripes FAQ’s, they SAY they charge a fee.

Brenda, if you read Paypal's FAQ, they charge fees as well. But Rover assumed them. That 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction is pretty standard for processors BTW from eBay to Paypal to Etsy. I think the only thing to do is call Rover and ask if they will be continuing to pay the fees.

Then I guess we need to put River up against the wall and get an actual Answer??!?!

Brenda, if you read above, Dwight just used Stripe to withdraw his Rover balance and there weren't any Stripe fees.

Big news: Direct deposit is coming to your Rover account! With payment processor Stripe®, we are not only bringing more security to payments, but also providing direct deposits from your Rover balance right to your bank account.

What to expect: In the coming weeks, you’ll get an email from us with a link to update your payment information with Stripe. Have your bank account information and Social Security number handy! Once you have completed this, your current Rover balance will be available in Stripe for payout to a verified bank account. Keep an eye out for that email and if you have any questions in the meantime, check out our FAQ on the subject or get in touch with Rover Support at rover.com/help.

All the best, The Rover sitter team

This stinks :-(

Does it say anywhere that we, the recipients, will have to pay Stripe fees? Rover absorbs the fees from Paypal. What makes anybody think it wouldn't be the same with Stripe?

This is not true!! I’m very upset with the delay in my earnings!!!

Stripe isn't working for me. I gave them my information and the payments have failed.

I'm trying to set it up and it looks like Stripe will charge .5% per transaction. Granted, that's not much, but with the 20% Rover takes, plus no charge for us to use Paypal, it adds up and it's frustrating.

Ingrid, Dwight verified above that you will **not** be paying Stripe any fees.

I called Rover & was told we would now get 1099's. I told them I have always gotten a 1099. My wait for the deposit could take a few days. I also said I was not comfortable giving out all my private info. I was told everyone else was excited. I was the only complaint or concern.
