Need urgent advice, extended house-sitting job with several issues, what should I do?

I have several dilemmas

A new client put in a request for me to housesit for 13 nights at their house. We had not one but three meets & greets to ensure that this would be a good fit for us. The client has two dogs, one of which is new to them and who had just passed obedience training, but is wary of new people including me, and will growl. I am currently halfway through the stay at this place and this dog has diarrhea everywhere. Last night I grabbed my steam cleaner from my house and I cleaned so much diarrhea in that basement. There is a gate blocking the stairs but I guess the dog was hopping it or opening the gate itself. Yesterday I heard a clash sound and I saw that the gate had been completely knocked over. That's when I discovered all the diarrhea in the basement. There was so much. And there was some up in the room I'm sleeping in. Not even 12 hours later there was more diarrhea upstairs and on the main floor of the house. I walk the dogs regularly and they poop and pee regularly on their walks. I even the new dog more than the other because of this diarrhea problem.

The client's mother is currently staying in the house too, I'm not sure why she is staying there if I was hired to stay there as well. But she sometimes tells me how to do my job and it bothers me. She will say stuff like "are they supposed to be getting that much food?" or "aren't you supposed to be playing with them?" Then I read her the instructions the client gave me and she steps back. She also asked me to move my backpack out of the front room of the house?? I didn't appreciate that because I am being paid to stay there and I feel like I should be allowed to have my stuff there too. Not to mention the fact that this lady brought her three-month-old puppy with her (which I was informed about thank goodness) but this puppy interferes with my ability to take care of the two dogs I'm hired to take care of. This pup is not potty trained I don't believe and she will pee and poop on the floor and I don't know if I should clean it up or if I should tell the mother.

Also, I should be getting much more money for this job than what we agreed upon. I charge $50 a night per dog and there are two dogs. If I'm staying there for 13 nights, I should be getting $1300. The client listed both dogs under the same profile in Rover, so when booking came about, the two dogs just showed up as one dog. Hi Elizabeth,

Sorry to hear about all the problems you are having despite multiple M&Gs. In that respect, you did everything correctly, although you shouldn't bargain with clients. Usually those are the ones that turn out to be the most problematic. If she had put those dogs in a kennel, she wouldn't get that much of a discount, especially during a holiday period, when you should be charging more than your regular rate. P.S. I noticed on your rate table that your regular rate is $50/night, but your holiday rate is only $45. That makes no sense. Also puppy rates should always be more than for an adult dog and yours is less. They are much more work. Finally, get rid of that "stays of 1 Night or More rate since it is the same as your regular rate. No need to confuse things.

Now to your specific questions.

  1. You agreed to the substantial discount; therefore, you are gong to have to live with it. Live and learn.

  2. No, you cannot bring in someone else to stay there if you aren't able to complete the job. You will need to inform Rover and have them deal with it. But you are going to take a hit with Rover, possibly only in your search results ranking, but it could be worse.

The most important thing is to inform Rover that this client has 2 dogs and didn't complete profiles on both. That's something Rover is going to want to know about. If you ever encounter this again, do not under any circumstance let it go. For your own protection and Rover's guarantee, all pets need to be listed.

Finally, taking care of the mother's dog is not your job. No one is paying you to do so. They're not even paying you enough for the second dog. Also, you should inform the owner about the dog's diarrhea because there could be some underlying medical issues. You might try feeding the dog some bland white rice mixed into its food, plus canned pumpkin (not the stuff for pies) is excellent.

Adding two more points to the fully comprehensive answer already given-how would client “adjust the difference when we return home”? Is this a client who you connected with through rover? Booked through rover? The diarrhea described could be 100% stress related = definitely inform the owner.
