What would you do if the dog your sitting isnt well cared for?

So I was caring for this dog that had a collar that was too tight and locs all over his coat which he would rip out via scratching. the owner didnt want me to do anything about nor get the dog a new collar. I was watching this dog for 2 weeks with no clue what to do since the owner said not to do anything. I washed out the open wounds and cut out the locs but other than that I felt like I shouldnt have given the dog back... any ideas should this happen again?

The worse thing to do is Nothing the second best thing to do is the right thing . Do what your heart tells you to do . The dog might go home and go back to the same life but at least he will remember your kindness and it’s all about the dogs at the end of the day .

If you feel that the pet is being mistreated or not cared for you need to be the voice for that pet.

It does not hurt to contact Animal Control. Animal Control will do a wellness check on the pet and take actions according. But YOU need to contact Animal Control today. Best of Luck!

Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable giving the dog back to the owner knowing that it isn't being properly cared for. I would be calling Rover support, even if they can't do anything, so that it's documented that they are aware of your concern.

I have a similar situation currently, and did raise the giant red flag to Rover… to my disappointment they did nothing. Told me to raise my concerns to the owners.

What you can do greatly depends on what state you live in and what the laws are surrounding neglect. In my state you cannot refuse to give a dog back to the owner no matter what, in the eyes of the law it is considered theft and they can call the police on you :(

The only actions I know are allowed for sure are a call to rover support so it's on record officially, and then a call to your local animal control to see what they can do legally.

This happened to me long before I started sitting for Rover, so I had to deal with it on my own. I sent pictures of the dog to the owner and asked them what the reason for the problems. When they tried to brush it off I emailed the pictures to my city's animal control and called them. The dog wasn't in dire straits, but it was concerning to the officer. I gave them all the information of the owner and after the owner picked the dog up AC contacted them. I never knew what happened after that, but I hope they had a wake up call.
