How do I decline messaging off-rover?

I know that we aren't supposed to message with a new client off-rover. I have no problem with this (as I have heard many horror stories and I've experienced one first hand before I got on Rover,) but whenever a new client asks if I can text them at their real number I never know what to do. I've had a couple people ask me and when I declined I didn't hear from them again. Are they all scams or are some real people who just don't understand? It happened again this morning, he said that he was new to rover so he didn't know how to "go about it." I'll include my response to see if there's something I'm saying that is coming across wrong, but I would love to get your opinions and maybe some tips on how to deal with having to say no to a potential client.

My response : "Their should be a place on your profile where you can opt to receive texts through Rover and they will give you a dummy number so you can protect your real number. Unfortunately do to some instances that have happened in the past I am uncomfortable giving out my own number. If you'd like we can set up a meet and greet where we can discuss the details in person!"

Rover facilitates the exchange of the messages that get routed through an (858) area code number and then automatically re-direct to their personal or your personal cell phone, so both parties can still enjoy the convenience of texting one another with safety and security of not disclosing your number. If you text that way, you'll also see your messages will be recorded in a string for each person, which can be helpful if you contact support and need them to review the conversation. The 858 number will not deliver messages to you during any "Quiet hours"if you set them. If you wish, you could provide your personal number, but that's kind of like throwing away a safety net. Sometimes when people are new to Rover, it can take a while to getting used to it, especially for some (often an older demographic) who do not use the internet much.

Your response is good. I'd likely write something like: On the left side of my screen, about half way down, there's a toll free 858 area code Rover assigned number that has been provided so we can contact each other, via phone or text messages. I can view the number to contact you, but only you and Rover can see the number assigned to you to contact me. This has been set up for the safety of everyone using the platform, so both parties can enjoy the convenience of texting one another with safety and security without disclosing personal numbers. Please feel free to contact me via that number. Look forward to hearing from you.
