Do you charge differently for housesitting based on time requirements?

I've been a Rover sitter for two years, and I have done quite a bit of overnight house sitting with relatively few issues. Over the summer I seemed to notice an uptick in house sitting requests where I feel like I end up being asked to be at the home way more than I feel is fair for the rate. I've gotten some requests recently where the owner basically expects me to be at their home all weekend (like Friday morning thru late Sunday), only leaving for very short stretches.

I get a lot of weekend requests that are Friday through Sunday and it's booked as "two nights," Friday night and Saturday night, and you get paid whatever your rate is per night for two nights. But some owners seem to think this entitles them to expect you to come as early as Friday morning and stay until late in the day on Sunday. By contrast, I have other clients who pay me the same amount just to come in the evenings and leave in the mornings.

Anyone experienced this? Do you charge differently if people request that amount of care? My rates are fairly low (for an experienced sitter) so maybe I simply just need to charge more, but I want to differentiate from the repeat client who just asks me to crash at their place and let their dogs out a few times in the process.

I consider my house sit rate to cover 24 hours, and the clock starts when I arrive. If the departure time is significantly later I will charge a daycare fee of $10. I always discuss expectations and my schedule with the client at the M&G or via message. I usually move into the client home and stay there the majority of the time, mainly because I don't like driving back and forth to my house and I don't have many clients other than boarding.

I was actually coming into the community to ask the same question. While I understand the "24 hours" coverage viewpoint, I consider it "by the day" which is basically 24 hours. Unless the starting time is really late or the ending time is really early, I will ask the owner if they mind if I adjust the rate to include the full amount of days. In fact, one of my clients actually brought it up with me first by saying "I don't think they charged me for the last day?" and we adjusted it. On the booking, I just use the "cost adjustment" option and add on the extra day. If they have an issue with it, you could always reach a rate you both agree on - maybe half your daily rate? I've only ever had one client question it and then she realized that it was fair to charge the extra. I rarely, if ever, have bookings that start late and end early so it really should give us the option to include the last day.

I have also had issues with Rovers pet-sitting fee being described as "per night." Personally, I consider it fair to define a stay as starting no earlier then the late afternoon/early evening and ending sometime in the morning but no later than noon. When a client wants me to spent an extended amount of time at their home without leaving I like to charge per hour, and I adjust the "per night rate" accordingly. For example, I just recently completed a booking for 10+ hours in which I charged $10 an hour. The client found this to be perfectly reasonable, but I have also had people tell me that stays where the hourly rate worked out to be $2 an hour were too expensive. My best advice is to charge what YOU think is fair for your time/work.

Rover needs to have more options for pricing. I charge $40 to stay at someone's house during the day and an additional $40 to stay overnight. The pricing on Rover confuses clients.

I feel like each night should include 24 hours of care. So if they are gone longer then 24 hours per each night they have paid for I would consider charging them for the extra time.

So like if they paid for two nights, left Friday morning and came backSunday morning I would consider that as all include for their two nights, but if they came back Sunday evening I would charge more since they went over their time.

Yes, as previous answer stated, it's a 24 hour time frame. I offer a 12 hour time frame price as well for that extra time. I state that I come and go during the day with three potty breaks that includes one walk. Then stay overnight. But I usually just stay if I can so there's less back and forth. The time spent seems like a lot to me for the pay as well, therefore I ponder stopping the service or raising price. Staying at people houses makes me feel a bit buggy as well. That's where you have to get brave and just say no after the meet if things don't look comfortable and clean. I state during the inquiry that I can stay overnight if it's comfortable.
