What are the dangers of an adult dog gaining a lot of weight in a short space of time?

My family and I have just returned from holiday. My 6 year old beagle has stayed with my friend and when returned when have come to find that he has gained a lot of weight (nearly doubled) in the space of two weeks. You can no longer see his ribs and it is clear he isn’t breathing as well as he used to. What are the dangers of gaining a lot of weight in a short space of time and what is the best way to help him lose weight? Your help will be very much appreciated.

Well from basically doubling his weight obesity can occur which comes along certain tumors, high blood pressure, and heart disease. I would suggest trying to to get him to be more active and to burn more calories than he is taking in. So examples are taking him for runs/walks and playtime outside.

Rapid weight gain over a short period of time is often the cause of illness such as Thyroid disease, Cushing's Disease, bloat, heart disease and liver disease among others. The best thing is to have your dog examined by your veterinarian to determine the cause of the weight gain.
