What to do when dog gets aggressive after pet sitting starts?

Hi everyone, I just started a house-sitting gig for three dogs. I've met the family twice and got along well with the dogs. I showed up today and the biggest dog started showing signs of aggression. He started barking with tail slowly wagging while very close to me and staring at my eyes, and his whole body was alert and seemed ready to spring. His ears were back as well. I didn't feel particularly safe around the dog as I think he saw me as an intruder.

I am not sure what to do. The family just left this morning and are hours away by flight. Has anyone experienced this kind of situation before?

Did you actually ask how they behave when a "stranger" (you) show up at the house while the parents are gone?? A lot of dogs act differently when left alone with a stranger, or stranger showing up at their house, esp if they are a pack of 3 dogs. You have to step up and show no fear, considering you accepted to sit 3 dogs, it would be safe to say you are experienced with multiple dogs? I had this happening once before. I showed up at the house with a 29 inch tall German shepherd who definitely did not appreciate me showing up when his family was gone. I played it safe by getting his attention with his favorite toy and cookie.. I made sure to know in advance what he likes/dislikes/reacts to and had it ready. He became my best friend immediately but I did freeze for a second when he grabbed my hand and growled....

So you should do the same, firm voice, calm attitude, no fear, do not challenge him... but if you are worried, then do call Rover, because these 3 dogs are a pack and if one tries to bite you, his brothers will help him.

Good luck. Stay safe!

Treats, treats and more treats, the dog doesn't trust you yet. Sure he met you at the meet and greet but now you are in HIS home while his parents are away. Just be on guard and cautious while you win over the trust issue and in most cases the issue will disappear in short order. Best of luck to you

What treats do you use? And, do you check with the owner if they can have treats prior to booking?

I always do a meet-n-greet at mealtimes. It's the time of the day where everyone interacts the most, and I get to see portions, where the food is, what they say to the animals, where they put the food, etc. I have forms I fill out with a bunch of questions — so if something doesn't come up I check
