Will Rover ever update to include small pet care?

I'm relatively new to Rover but I would love to care for small pets in addition to cats and dogs. I find that it's really hard to market towards them and the best I can do is include it in my description and tag line. What I'm curious is if Rover has any plans to set it up a little better for booking. I personally have 2 chinchillas and 2 hamsters and it's extremely hard trying to find a sitter on this site that could watch my pets. If there was a button to check for small pets and fish like there is for cat care, it would be EXTREMELY helpful.

I also think it would be nice as a sitter to be able to set different prices for my services for the little ones. I don't think it's fair to charge as much for a hamster or fish as you would for a dog. With smaller pets, often all that's needed is a water bottle change and food fill. Nothing like the attention you would have to give to a cat or dog.

Just some thoughts as a new Rover user and critter mom.

I agree with you but I guess at the same time... you mentioned you have Chinchillas, Hamsters, & fish. Then I have also watch pigs, chickens, lizards, a ferret, a tortoises, & even a goat once. So where would you draw the line? I totally hear you, just not sure where Rover would than draw the line.

Yeah I agree that it would be hard to draw a line but maybe even just adding like 3 more categories: small pets(that would maybe include reptiles, mammals and birds), fish, and farm animals?

I've watched chickens before! They're neat :o)

I agree with you, and I totally love taking care of small pets, in fact I have bunnies I take care of regulary:) As for the price I understand it's less work, but unless the sitter is very close to you it's probably not going to be worth their time to go to your home for less than their base price, even if it's only every couple days. You could always contact sitters that do daycare or boarding and ask if they could care for your tanked little ones, assuming they have a safe room to keep the other pets away, and they could offer a discounted rate since there'd be no travel involved. Hope that helps!

I love the exotics too - warm and cold-blooded. I charge the "cat rate" for them. Drop-ins are fine for a few days. But I don't feel comfortable with them being alone overnight for an extended time, so I also board exotics, giving them lots of attention and cuddling on the sofa !

This is what I’d like to do! I’d love to have more critter clients and I’d happily take them in my home but I feel like it’s hard for critter parents to find me being as they can’t search for critter care. I like the idea of the cat rate for them!

Many people who live in apartment have small pets. You could leave your business card under each door if you live near apartment buildings.

I think Critter would be an adorable category for Rover to have :o) I wonder if their reluctance to add that feature has to do with their insurance limits? IIRC they don't cover exotics, undomesticated, or farm animals.

Ana- I love that idea! Thanks I may just do that. Jennifer- yeah I could see that being why they don’t have the option. I wonder if they included an extra note at the top of the page for when people are booking for those types of animals it would be enough to include them..?

I just read their Terms of Service listing the animals we cannot care for. Exotics, among other categories, are out ! So no rabbit care !

Right. I let my client know that they aren't covered thru insurance, however I also don't want to get dinged for taking a Rover client off site, you know? So we do bookings thru rover.

That’s what I plan to do too. As long as the client understands, I’m still willing to watch their other pets.

This forum is mostly Rover sitters and it's very rare to find a Rover employee in the midst if ever. It's a great idea for small pets but I wouldn't think Rover has any interest in making this an option.

I figured as much. I honestly just wanted to see other people’s opinions and see if it’s something people have ever seen rover express interest in the past for. Since I just started not too long ago, I wouldn’t know.
