Client requesting additional insurance. Is it a scam?

A potential client wanted me to walk their dogs for 5 days. I set up a meet and greet. After they confirmed the meet and greet, they messaged me asking me if I carried an additional insurance policy in addition to the Rover Guarantee. When I told them I did not, they insisted I purchase and additional insurance policy costing approximately $130 per year and they would be willing to pay for the first week of the policy "to protect yourself and myself" and "because the Rover Guarantee isn't real insurance". I archived the request.

Does any of this seem odd to you? Have you had a similar experience? How did you handle it?

Rover insurance provides limited 3rd party coverage for the client's dog when under your care, custody, and control, but provides almost no liability coverage at all for the sitter. While it's weird the client is asking you to have additional insurance in my opinion if you are serious about this business it makes sense to carry your own independent insurance so I disagree with Erica's response.

Having additional insurance is always a good idea because Rover's coverage is very limited. However, it is not required, and I would decline the request if someone insisted that I get it. it sounds fishy that they would pay for the first week. I would say something like, "Rover's insurance is real coverage and is designed to cover your pet should anything happen. I do not feel comfortable with your demand that I purchase additional insurance so I must decline your request. Rover has many sitters/walkers available and you can contact them for assistance in finding the best one." Then archive as 'owner not a good fit.'

Oh wow, I have never had that situation. I would contact Rover and let them know the conversation so they can flag the persons account. Sounds like she is using this platform as a way to solicit insurance.

I would of handled it the same way that you did. (plus reporting to Rover) Yes there is more insurances out there that yes we can get but I personally do not see the need of it at this time. Rovers insurance is sufficient enough.

Sucks you had to deal with that. =[
