The dog that I'm sitting is in heat but I wasnt told she would start before the visit started. What do i do now?

I'm sitting a dog who started her bleeding potion of her heat cycle the second day that I had her. Her owners didnt inform me that she was about to go into heat and now I'm unable to get ahold of them. Most likely they didnt know she was about to start, but now I have nothing for her bleeding. I'd like to buy dog panties and pads but I just want to make sure that the owners are willing to reimburse me. What should I do?

My dog just finished her bleeding cycle, and the pads I bought were to small, so when I went to return them they were out of the correct size so the lady at the counter said to buy maxi pads (equate brand) $2.99 and buy little boys underwear with the "Y" opening for the tail.

I actually just took an old pair of underwear cut a hold for the tail placed the maxi pad and used some string to tighten the underwear up so it would stay on! let's just say we had at least had a really good laugh! I have a 15 pound Shih Tzu.

If you aren't sure if the owners will reimburse you - a cheap alternative is go buy disposable baby diapers made for the correct weight. Figure out where a small slit needs to be made on the diaper for the tail to thread through, and then place on the dog. When they return for their dog, give them the receipt and ask for reimbursement.

I like all of the doggie diaper suggestions and want to suggest that you write up a policy page, contract, etc for clients to read/sign prior to service. Required items can be listed as well as reimbursement of needed supplies. Expectations are upfront and the families know to reimburse you --- as needed --- when they get home.

I agree. If it's too hard for you to manage her care Rover will help re-home her for the duration of the sit.

Since the dog is in your care, first and foremost contact the owner immediately to inform them. If stated on your page that you don't accept dogs in heat provide the client with the unfortunate information and arrange a pick-up. If willing to watch the dog in heat contact the owner to see on their behalf if they have a certain budget they're willing to spend for the essentials needed; therefore, you're well aware that you'll be compensated. There's various of options to choose from when trying to help the bleeding. Try using a diaper depending on the dog size, menstrual pads held down by some cloth (tights, panties, tight shorts), or gather some tissue/cotton stuff it onto some tape before taping it down to her lower body like a diaper. As for the dog until the bleeding stops within a few days it's important to make sure she's occupied, hydrated and in a isolated area where she can't stain any useful furniture. Would possibly recommend placing her in a cage if all odds fail.
